Modular Phone Maker Modu Closing Doors

Modular Phone Maker Modu Closing Doors

Summary: Modu, an Israeli company with an innovative modular approach to smartphones, is closing its doors.

An Israeli company with an innovative modular approach to smartphones is closing its doors. Modu could never get its unique modular phone system to take off, and has laid off most of its staff in preparation for shutting down for good next month. Unfortunately, employees are reporting that layoffs were made without earned compensation being distributed.

The Modu system had a tiny phone core that snapped into modules designed for different purposes. The company has shown modules that turn the little core unit into a handset with a full QWERTY keyboard, and another handset that is VoIP only. The innovation of the modular system was not sufficient to get sales ramped up to a feasible level.

I am a fan of modular systems using phones, but the Modu failing was in concentrating on a tiny core unit that wasn't powerful. This unit only plugs into different handset modules, which in effect simply turns it into different types of phones. Perhaps if they concentrated on creating modules that served different purposes they would have been more successful.

  • Say it isn't so James.....Who?

Neither here nor there. Never heard of the outfit but it's too bad they didn't succeed as they seem to be true innovators.

    • It was obvious that the approach is **doomed**

@Dietrich T. Schmitz, Your Linux Advocate: because any modular technical solution is less technically advanced than integral one.

While, as idea, it is conceptually beautiful, it is non-practical. That is why Mercedes never released to production high profile modular car they presented many years ago, even though if was "one push" to take off the roof and to replace it so the car would change from coupe to sedan or to unversal (et cetera) and it was really smooth and in-depth developed.

  • RE: Modular Phone Maker Modu Closing Doors

You are right, Modu could have been a successful, if its core unit had little more powerful than their current offerings.

  • Made in Israel? No thanks

It's a Israeli product, a lot of people, see them board ships and kill peace protesters and we never buy from any Israeli company, ever.

Likewise we don't give Israeli companies the opportunity to get any of our data after they forged our passports.

So Modu closes it's doors, well I hope Rachel Corrie smiles down from heaven at that.
