More HP TouchPads are on the way

More HP TouchPads are on the way

Summary: HP plans another production run of TouchPad tablets to meet the demand for the $99 product.

SHARE:

In another bizarre twist in the already insane HP TouchPad story, the company has notified customers unable to get hold of a $99 tablet that more are being built for sale. The HP NextBench blog says that HP has decided to "produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand."

HP won't state how many it plans to make, nor how many unfulfilled orders it has in its system. It will have one more production run in the company's fiscal fourth quarter which ends October 31, and reading between the lines of the HP blog post it sounds like those have already been spoken for with orders the last go-round.

HP has included a detailed FAQ in the blog post for interested parties, and recommend that those wanting to keep informed about this new production run follow @BrynaatHP and @MarkatHP on Twitter for updates.

This latest turn of events shouldn't be that surprising given the way HP has handled the TouchPad. It is no wonder that HP can't even kill the TouchPad properly.

    HP is a riddle wrapped up in an enigma without a clue. Repeat after me: the touchpad should have been priced at a loss to begin with ($249 or so), to build up a critical mass.

    • This is a constructive way to use up inventory!

      @chapelhillice
      Since they are taking a write off anyway, why not do something constructive with it and make customers happy?

      • Customers or vultures

        @kd5auq There were so many people abusing the liquidation that I don't think nearly as many customers were made happy as there could have been. Some knucklehead on Slickdeals was bragging about how he was able to get an order filled for 999 of them turning him a nice profit. Many others were buying 5-10 at a time to take advantage of selling them to other people at a profit. They could have made more customers happy by pricing it at $200-249 which would still have been a great deal OR having a limit of 2-5 per customer so people couldn't take advantage or abuse it.

  • Darn it

    Just filling out past orders?

  • We've heard this song before.

    HP did the same thing with their Windows Slate. They clearly have the world's worst supply forecasters. It's a good thing that Apple had to make Tim Cook's compensation package public via the SEC. Now HP knows exactly how much a World Class Operations guy costs.

    Speculation.
    I imagine the past orders they are filling are to large companies who will inturn be selling them to the public. How big of a production run will likely determine which markets they will become available.

  • Typical new HP. If you're losing $ on every unit try to make it up on volume

    Holly crap this is getting beyond farcical. So glad I sold my HP shares when it was still above 50. More moves like this might push it back into a buy range but that's if they eventually stop running it like a bunch if donkeys.

      @Johnny Vegas

      I'm glad you were able to make a profit from your stock. But just look at it from the dimwitted consumers view (me): Holy Cow! A ten inch tablet for 99 bucks?! It has flash and gets apps right? Sign me up!

      Point is, stay out of the stock lingo and just ride the wave.

    Nah, Like I said before, this is a marketing stunt! Bet Big or Go Home! They know they will cross 5 or 6 Million soon and their Tablet branding will be one of the biggest names on the Market!

    "HP can?t even kill the TouchPad properly"

    Quote of the day!

    At least the OuchPad has made the market learn that a tablet should be priced in the $200 range if it is to sell to the masses, and not $500 like laptops.

      @lgpOnTheMove Apple didn't get that memo and as a result they are enjoying major profits from their tablet division. It's not that the tablet sweet spot is $200 or $500, but people need to either have a better price or believe they are getting a better product for their individual needs.

    What terrible news for The Other Guys (Samsung, Moto, et. al.). Here comes another batch of $100 tablets to totally wreck their sales for another quarter. Who in their right mind is going to buy a $400 Iconia or XOOM as long as this is going on?

    Like many on the other thread, I assume the decision to make more is driven by contractual commitments with suppliers, parts inventories, or both.

      @Robert Hahn You think this has no impact on Apple? Are you that naive? People who have no clue what this touchpad is keep asking me, "what do you think of that HP Touchpad thing, should I get one for $99?" I look at these people like, Yeah, go grab one! I love it when they find out they are sold out and the system has been discontinued.

      • Who knew?

        I would guess that something like 70% of the people who will buy an iPad in the next ninety days do not know that HP is footballing tablets for $99, and in fact do not even know that HP had a tablet. Some of the stuff we geeks pay attention to is simply not known to the general public.

        Sure, this sale will impact Apple. But not like it impacted (and will impact) the Android vendors. Most people were walking right past the Android stuff anyway. It's the people who would buy an Android tablet who will snap up these $99 TouchPads.

    $99 for that HP tablet is the best deal ever. I envy those who managed to get one for that price.

  • RE: More HP TouchPads are on the way

    Anyone things that this is a resurrection of the TouchPad is fooling themselves! This is just to satisfy the people that ordered TouchPad's over HP's website. Many orders have NOT been filled yet. Plus, retail is completely out of the question. Stores such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart & Staples for example are NOT happy they had an oversupply of inventory, that HP didn't want to take back! Instead they tried to hurt their retail outlets by dropping the price through their site to $99-$149. This forced Best Buy & other retailers to go along with it, but were guaranteed that any leftover stock would be the responsibility of HP. WebOS/TouchPad was a bad idea. It wasn't well thought out & really had NO chance, considering its original release was a total failure, NO one was interested in. WebOS lovers are fundamentally "cheap" & HP failed to realize that!
