Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 rumored to be 10-inch, misses the mark

Summary: The Galaxy Tab 2 is expected to be an updated version of the Tab running Android 3.0, aka Honeycomb, on a bigger slate form with a 10-inch screen. I'm afraid a 10-inch Galaxy Tab is a mistake, as it isn't going to compete well with the iPad.

Word has leaked that Samsung is aiming to repeat its success with the Galaxy Tab by announcing the Galaxy Tab 2 at the MWC in a few days. The Galaxy Tab 2 is expected to be an updated version of the Tab running Android 3.0, aka Honeycomb, on a bigger slate form with a 10-inch screen. I'm afraid a 10-inch Galaxy Tab is a mistake, as it isn't going to compete well with the iPad.

Let me qualify my statements by making it clear I am speaking from experience. I have an iPad, which sits largely unused since I bought the Galaxy Tab from Sprint. The Tab has become my go-to mobile device and is used more than any mobile device in Mobile News Manor. So why won't a bigger Tab compete with the iPad? Size.

The 7-inch form of the Galaxy Tab is the sole reason it has replaced the iPad for me. Sure the Tab does everything I want to do with a tablet, but it is the more portable (and comfortable) size of the Tab that displaces the iPad for me. If the Galaxy Tab was as big as the iPad, I would almost certainly use Apple's slate. I would probably not own the Tab as the iPad interface is smoother and the app selection is bigger than that of the Tab.

Samsung needs to understand that based on my experience with both tablets, the Tab's only advantage over the iPad is the smaller form factor. Price is not that big a factor as both are similarly priced, and having a Wi-Fi only model is an advantage of the iPad over the Galaxy Tab that requires a data contract to get the best pricing.

I love my Galaxy Tab and it is not uncommon to see me with it in my hand at any given moment. That is strictly due to the convenient size the 7-inch form brings to the experience. If the Tab had the same form as the iPad, I would almost certainly still be using the iPad.

    I actually agree. I like my 7 inches tab and I can carry it around.

  • You lost all credibility when you said "repeat its success"

    considering Galaxy Tab has already had two price drops and a 16% return rate.

    • RE: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 rumored to be 10-inch, misses the mark

      @frgough@... the return rate was corrected to <2% by Samsung

      • Return rate is no SEC data for which people from Samsung can go to jail

        @JamesKendrick: so of course, PR people may tell whatever and no one will be able to disprove these claims.

        Anyway, Samsung's move is right since most people still want iPad-size, not smaller one -- where Android 2.* applications look ridiculously big and Android 3.* application will look ridiculously small (<b>in both cases 7" size is either twice bigger or twice smaller than optimal</b>).

        It should be understood that Andoid 3.* applications will be developed in the 10 inch size guidelines.

      • 16% return rate to Vendors. 2% return rate to Samsung.

        @JamesKendrick

        Given Samsung shipped 2,000,000 to vendors, can calculate how many the Vendors actually sold?

      • RE: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 rumored to be 10-inch, misses the mark

        @JamesKendrick the problem isnt really a PR issue, it is the fact that buying the tablet on T Mobile might leave you wanting for connectivity so you have to return it and get one from another vendor.

        I bought a Dell Streak 7 and couldn't use it at work or at home with the T Mobile Service so I returned it and went to the Galaxy Tab on Verizon... I am glad I did, this is a great device.

        @denisrs nah, everything looks great on this 7" Tablet so I do not know where you are getting that from. There is a market for smaller tablets.

        As for people wanting 10" Tablets, no, that is a myth conceived in the fact that people lose their minds whenever Apple releases a new device.

        How about this independent analyst? He claims that the return rate for the Galaxy Tab was a fabrication by Apple's fans

        A potential lawsuit from Samsung against these folks could come.

        @Bruizer Stuffing channels before the Christmas shopping season is done by all mobile device suppliers. Even Apple!!! In fact at any given time Apple has at least a Weeks worth of stock, just to keep up. If you look at Apple's reports they state as shipped to retailers as well. It's all just more bogus RDF (Reality Distortion Field) generated propaganda against Samsung. Who if CrApple doesn't watch it will decide to cut their parts supplies short!!! ahaha....

        Checked sold data on both suppliers (Samsung and Apple), and those numbers shipped were done so for both companies primarily before November. But income shows both companies had much higher year on year sales and profits on items not offered in 2009! .....meaning of course iPhone 4, iPad, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S phone lines. In fact Galaxy S Series Smartphones weren't that far behind iPhone 4 sales alone. Without any other Android Phones that combined obliterated Apple's iPhone4 Sales and is the reason Android took over the #1 Smartphone lead from Nokia last year, leaving Apple still lagging behind RIM! ....STICK THAT IN YOUR iCrAppleholic ear..... FOOL! #Won #one #1 it's all the same to Samsung! lol..... ;)

      @frgough@... Who are you to speak on credibility, the writer has laid out the case that the bigger move is a bad step for consumers. I totally agree especially as I bought 1st a 9"Pandigital ereader which was too big I replaced it with a Nextbook next 3 which is 8.4" and still so wide that I can not easily hold it in one hand.

      Also, I carry a small messenger case that holds my Asus 1018P netbook, the next3 8.4" fits but takes up alot of space...I have been thinking on getting a Samsung 7" tablet since it will fit in the front pocket of my messenger allowing lots of free space in the larger case plus I can hold it better, in addition to all of the added features.

      I am an electronics engineering major as well as an industrial designer of products, and as far as making choices for consumer products I am telling you that 8.4" is too large for a tablet let alone 10"; heck everyone has either a netbook or laptop these days so the 7" size is the de facto best overall size for any tablet...PERIOD~! No discussions...no questions.

  • Have to try it

    There have to be at least one million people who will buy a Samsung 10-incher just because it's not an Apple 10-incher. Heck, we have almost that many such people posting on ZDNet.

    Besides, they have to try it. It's not much of an incremental engineering effort, they were going to do Honeycomb anyway, so why not toss it out there and see if the dogs eat the dog food?

      @Robert Hahn I completely agree. I get the argument about a 7inch device being easier to carry around, but I want a 10inch NON-APPLE device. The only reason I have not already purchased an iPad is because it is from Apple, which necessarily means less features, "hold it this way/it's your problem not ours", and you can only do with it what we say you can. No thank you. Give me an Android 10 inch please.

    I use my phone as my carry around gadget, does everything that your TAB does and I don't need to wear cargo pants.

  • I am waiting.

    I'm waiting for the press release to see if I should return my Galaxy Tab but at 10" it is larger than I want.

  • Just wait for the next generation Apple iPod touch

    Apple rumors seem to indicate a 7 inch screen iPad might be in the works. That might become reality but Apple would never call it an iPad. (It's that Steve Jobs mandate thing).

    But what would prevent Apple from naming that 7 inch tablet an iPod Touch?

      @kenosha7777 or an iPad Nano?

      @kenosha7777

      Rumor me this, rumor me that.

      Havent you heard what Steve Jobs said during his investors meating call?

      He specifically stated that the 7" form is "DOA" and that there will be no market for such a size.

      If Apple did make the 7", they will be eating their own words and conceding that they were wrong.

        Yep, I remember that. But again, once he called Microsoft the Big Brother and now they are (were) acting quite in the same faction.
        As it may be too soon for him to eat his words he might go for a 7.1'' o 6.9'' instead and at the end say as some suggest it is a ultra-large wow phone or say it is a complete new concept in mobile devices called the I-pocket (your money) with the wow factor added.

    Agree! I'm semi-heartbroken that it's coming out in 10". I just bought my Galaxy Tab a couple of months ago, and I love it! I thought the 7" form factor was their unique marketing position, making a mobile tablet that was...drum roll...actually mobile! I haven't seen an iPad in the wild, nor have I seen any men wearing murses to carry their iPads (endless humor in that situation, murses, pads, you get it).<br><br>Funny, I read rumors about the iPad going 7", which would have been tragic for non-sheeps...surprised Samsung went the other way.
