Samsung sells 2 million Galaxy Tabs in 3 months

Summary: Samsung has reported selling 2 million Galaxy Tabs in just 3 months, proving both the 7-inch form factor and the Android platform are good for tablets.

When talk turns to Android tablets, a common thread inevitably crops up that they are not as good as the iPad nor are they selling well. Samsung begs to differ, having sold two million Galaxy Tabs in just three months. The tablet sales have been distributed among Europe, North America and Asia, showing global demand for the 7-inch Android tablet.

Apple has outsold the Galaxy Tab by anyone's standards (7 million over the same time period), but for a tablet that came out of nowhere Samsung has done better than expected. The common lament (even by Google) that Android 2.2 (Froyo) that runs the Tab is not good enough for tablets, is debunked by the two million folks who gave the Galaxy Tab a good try. Yes it's essentially a large Android phone, but that's the strength of the device.

      @heredavid the Galaxy Tab shipped with Froyo, so not subject to the Galaxy S debacle.

    Is that 2 million sold to resellers or 2 million sold to consumers? (Just to be fair when comparing it with Windows Phones).

      @sean_hando@... From the linked article "According to Yonhap News, around 500,000 Galaxy tabs were sold in Europe, 350,000 in North America, and 330,000 in Asia." So thats sold to consumers not licences provided to distributors.....

        Actually, that doesn't necessarily mean sold to consumers. Just because they provided a breakdown of the locations where they were sold doesn't prove they were end user purchases.

    Proving once again that those insisting that the 10 inch form factor is the only future for tablets are suffering from delusions of grandeur. Be it iPad or Android, 7 inch all the way.

        @frgough <br>When 1/3rd as many = 2 million units with a device that isn't even yet a true 1.0 product, AND considering that these are an expensive non-necessity with an economy in the tank... Yea, I'd consider it a pretty damn good level of demand, and an even more viable argument that the 7 inch size is here to stay.

        @frgough <br>That's rather unfair. Sales of 2 million units in 3 months is still quite an achievement and it would seem to be far more than many pundits predicted. Whichever way you look at it, Samsung has done quite well.

  • Put together with Galaxy S and you have

    A qualified success story, in spite of less than optimal short term profits.

    I read though that the company ceo did not make short term profits ever their primary driving management objective.

    Interesting company indeed and now being handed over to the ceo's son.

    Samsung is pushing Galaxy Tabs in countries like India. Most of the people who just want a casual surfing are leaning towards Galaxy Tab for some reason. Both Galaxy Tab and iPad are neck to neck in south asian countries.

    Samsung is just "stuffing the pipelines", this has nothing to do with actual sales to consumers. Carriers were buying this thing thinking that they can grab a piece of the iPad (tablet) market craze offering subsidy pricing. I would love to know how well that's working for them. T-Mobile is already cutting their price on the Tab. ;-)

    • The test of your prediction is if you start seeing price reductions

      and two-for-one deals. If so, it would follow the trend of all other android devices.
