Owners of the original 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab sold by Sprint will be getting a major upgrade to Gingerbread beginning July 5. The update will be pushed out over-the-air beginning July 5, or a manual check can be forced to begin the update process. While some OTA updates roll out over a long period, the Sprint information indicates that all Tab owners will get it over a 4-day window.

I am still quite happy with my Sprint Galaxy Tab and I am looking forward to the Gingerbread update. The HTC Flyer I have been testing runs Gingerbread and it is a nice improvement over the Froyo version currently running on the Galaxy Tab. This Tab is the most heavily used gadget I own, which is saying a lot. The HTC EVO 4G smartphone I owned before trading it in on the Nexus S 4G had received an update to Gingerbread and the performance improvement was great. I am hoping for a similar experience with the Galaxy Tab.

That's a great news. I hope that becomes available to other carriers. I also own the original Galaxy Tab and it's been solid.

I have a Tab also through another carrier and I have to agree it is the most used gadget in the house. It sits in a central area and if any of the family need to check something or want to kill some time playing games they just grab the Tab. I figured they would be more prone to go to the desktop computer but it turns out they like being able to just grab it and use it wherever.

Even the author is ok with an Android device he can't update himself... still running 2.2????? and they wonder why the iPad sells so well..

  • Galaxy Tab 7 rules

The Galaxy Tab 7 is the best portable tablet. It's solid and robust. It's easy to pocket in a coat or any bag. And it's easy to hold in one hand.

I've tried many of them (including the iPad and Xoom), and I keep coming back to the Galaxy Tab 7 as the keeper.

I'm looking forward to the Gingerbread update as that will make a great tablet even better.

  • How about Gingerbread for wifi only Tabs?

I have a Verizon Galaxy 7" but with no data plan. Does anyone know if I can get this Gingerbread update?

I, also, would like to know if one can update without a data plan (sprint version)? On the 5th, I guess i'll find out.

The GT 7 is still a worthy competitor to the ipad2, even after bb playbook and honeycomb. The portability factor is big, making it a truly personalised companion device... Look forward to your update on the gtab post the gingerbread update

  • Is updating a good idea?

Where can I find the release notes, or any specific discussion of the improvements over Froyo, and what new bugs are introduced?

A common theme in the above posts is that updating is assumed to be a good thing. Why? Where is the evidence?
