No Google Fibre for You (Or Anyone Else) Yet

Summary: Hoping that Google would bring Gigabit Internet to your home town? Keep hoping. Google won't announce who gets ultra-fast Internet this year.

TOPICS: Browser, Google, Hardware

I, and lots of other people in Asheville, NC, and many other towns and small cities throughout the United States, have been waiting for Google to announce who would receive the blessing of Gigabit Fibre Internet. Alas, we'll have to wait for sometime in 2011 before we find out who wins.

In a blog posting by Milo Medin, newly appointed Google's VP of Access Services, Medin announced, that while Google had planned to announce our selected community or communities by the end of this year, but the level of interest was incredible-nearly 1,100 communities across the country responded to our announcement-and exceeded our expectations. [So,] While we're moving ahead full steam on this project, we're not quite ready to make that announcement."

Darn it.

Medin continued, "We're sorry for this delay, but we want to make sure we get this right. To be clear, we're not re-opening our selection process-we simply need more time to decide than we'd anticipated. Stay tuned for an announcement in early 2011."

Speaking for Asheville, and I know hundreds of other towns, we'll be tuned in.

Bell Canada will be rolling out FttH in Quebec City, Montreal and Toronto soon. The trials have already started and we should see mass activations before 2012. :)

Is there a way to find out if my community submitted an RFI? I'm looking at the second link posted in the article and not finding much.
