Alfresco's 3.3 ECM upgrade delivers CMIS support, integration with Lotus Notes, Outlook, Google Docs, Drupal,

By | May 27, 2010, 12:04pm PDT

Alfresco’s first commercially supported implementation of CMIS provides interoperability of its enterprise content management system with IBM Lotus social software, Google Docs, Drupal and Microsoft Outlook.

In addition to support for the Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS), Afresco’s Enterprise Edition 3.3, which was announced today, offers faster and easier deployment of composite applications on site, in the cloud, or on the Internet and the ability to link data, content, business process data and context.

The open source company chose to emphaize support for CMIS, a standard that gained final approval on May 4 by OASIS and that allows data be shared between applications and across Enterprise Content Management (ECM) repositories from different vendors.

CMIS support will allow Alfresco to provide content services for Lotus Notes, Quickr and Connections, such as records mangement and cloud deployment capabilities.

It will also enable users of Microsoft Outlook to create Alfresco Share sites to support meetings from within Microsoft Outlook Calendar, and offers Alfresco’s content management services to complement Drupal’s social publishing platform, Alfresco said.

The integration with Google Docs — which will be available in June — gives users online editing capabilities including the ability to modify and update content without having Microsoft Office installed.

Version 3.3 also gives customers flexible deployment options.  For example, the software’s new content formatting and transformation services allows customers to more easily repurpose content for multiple channels including the web, smartphones, the iPad and print, Alfresco said.

The upgraded content management systems also improves the ability to link data, content, business process and context. This translates into enhanced project management with content collaboration. For example, the software’s datalist features can be used to track project issues, to-dos and tasks to supplement current tagging, discussion and project sites.

The software also provides a new scriptable framework called Spring Surf for developing content rich applications, Alfresco announced. Spring Surf was build on SpringSource, a Java application infrastructure for developing Java applications that was acquired by VMware.

Alfresco customers include Boise Cascade, Merck, Air Force, Endeca, Cisco and H&R Block.
