Apple tablet: Even open source developers love it

Special Report: Apple Tablet

Developers are looking to today's launch of the Apple tablet the way kids look toward Christmas.

It's not because Steve Jobs has made himself a one-man Springsteen concert. It's because he makes developers money like no one else in business.

Appcelerator has conducted a survey among its 18,000 developers and found 90% plan to do something for the new Apple tablet within a year.

Appcelerator's flagship product is Titanium, a cross-platform open source development tool, so they have a stake in this. They want developers to know they can produce tablet apps with its open source tool.

But the trend is overwhelming, they write. The tablet is already the third-leading platform among their developers, even before its launch, following the iPhone and Android. They're especially looking forward to bundling their existing iPhone apps with programs for the tablet to increase sales.

Generally they look at the new device as an all-in-one PC, entertainment and communication device, the biggest thing since the IBM PC. Everything they have done for other devices can be re-purposed to the new platform, and re-sold, they figure, so bless Steve Jobs.

What is most interesting beyond that is how the tablet is seen as a serious business tool. The feature they are most anxious to get their hands on is the database, not the rumored new features like multi-touch gestures and the user interface.

Maybe Appcelerator should call itself Applecelerator? It does seem clear the tablet is going to have developers, developers, developers, developers.

  • so much hype!

tables have been arround for years and they are still just a blimp in the ecosystem.

    • people said the same thing about iPods and iPhones...

and yet look at where we are at now..

remember Ballmer laughing a big belly laugh at
      the iPhone? who's laughing now?

it's not just about the hardware and specs.. the
most important thing is making the user
interaction, the end to end experience easy and
fun for users and especially important for small
screen devices.. making sure the software/GUI is
appropriate for that size of screen. MS and the
others have still not learned.. after the success
of the iPhone what kind of a moron just
repurposes a desktop OS appropriate for large
screens and keyboard and mouse input for a tiny
screen with touch input.. and try to push that on
users like you actually did something.. it's
actually idiotic, and down right irresponsible at
this point in computing.. Balmer should have
seriously laughed off the stage at CES for
presenting those "Slate PC".. was that some kind
of joke? do these people just lack the capacity
      to innovate??

    • so what?

Be sure to let us know when you've come up with
the next revolutionary idea that's going to turn
the technology world upside down. Until then, keep
your mouth shut, because I have yet to hear of
anything remotely intelligent come out of that
      silly mouth of yours.

Smart phones have been around for years. It's a mature
market. Apple won't even be a blip on the horizon with their
    iPhone.

    Oh, wait...

  • Verb tense is questionable!

Wow. Love it? It's only being brought out TODAY. Will love it? Maybe. Geez. Use of wrong verb tense relating to liking this is a clear sign of overhype! (Not to mention crap-poor writing/journalism.)

  • Hype Translates to Serious Factual Errors

Dana, while I generally enjoyed this article, it contains one
    enormous factual error:

"Developers are looking to today?s launch of the Apple
tablet the way kids look toward Christmas.

It?s not because Steve Jobs has made himself a one-man
Springsteen concert. It?s because he makes developers
money like no one else in business."

Your statement is factually incorrect. Steve Jobs does not
make money for partner companies. He never has. In fact,
he often deliberately hurts other companies because it
allows for Apple to make a quick buck. This is true on all
of their platforms: Mac and iPhone. Moreover, it will
almost certainly be true of the upcoming iTab as well.

Let's first conider the Mac. While it is a nice platform, no
one will call it a thriving example of diversity. The
landscape of third party Mac developers is anemic at best.
It is mostly composed of tiny groups who manage to eek
out a living. Other than Microsoft and Adobe (both of
which started from positions of strength), which other
development houses have made serious money off of the
Mac? (Serious is defined as millions, tens of millions, or
billions.) I'm having a hard time coming up with anything.

So what about iPhone? Again, despite the number of apps,
there aren't very many cases of amazing success. In fact,
the app store is a case study of how not to build a healthy
third-party ecosystem. Apple is arbitrary in their
acceptance policies, two-faced in their dealings, and
they've created a system that forces app prices to be
artificially low. Other than a handful of exceptions, many
apps (perhaps even most apps) don't even make enough to
    cover their development costs.

Now compare this to what Sun or Microsoft built around
Java and C#, respectively. While it's a different market
(business versus consumer), both technologies have built
enormously successful third party developer communities.
To just focus on Microsoft, there are literally millions of
developers and large development houses that make a
comfortable living off of the Microsoft developer tools. I
know of several in my immediate area. They gross many
millions in annual services and allow their employees a
    very comfortable salary.

They have a relatively open and vibrant community.
There's no fear that Microsoft can suddenly kill their
product because it competes with their own offerings.

The same is simply not true of Apple's technology. Steve
Jobs is brilliant at making money, but he's never played
nicely with others and doesn't share. Therefore, to say "he
makes developers money like no one else in business" is
    simply wrong.

The database? The same database that is in the iPhone and OS X?
    SqlLite?

It must be that the real point that was being made sailed over my

  • This is a really,

This is a really,a reallyyyyyy stupid article. All read this, All read this, Top News today, Apple Developers make money, apple developers make money. I would expect that from a blogger not a 30 year journalist
    Stan57
    • It's a study from an open source company

As I wrote, an open source software company, which
makes development software, did a scientific
survey of its members and found wild enthusiasm
      for the new platform.

Why is that not a story? I would expect enthusiasm
from those who use proprietary tools, especially
Apple tools. But when it's overwhelming from those
using open source tools, I think it's a story.
      DanaBlankenhorn
      • I agree. It's news.

What Stan doesn't seem to realize is that just because he doesn't take anything away from this story, doesn't mean that others are the same.

I don't write apps, but I find it interesting that open-source app developers would be so eager for such a closed an prorietary platform, especially after the near outright rebellion they threatenned with regard to Apple's App approval process.
