Our reporters went to Boston for a nice quiet LinuxWorld and Comdex broke out.

Just a few highlights:

• Novell CEO Jack Messmansaid he hasconvinced CIOs that "open source and Linux in particular is the center of the enterprise."
• Novell also called its new line-up of products "hardened for mission-critical applications,"launching what it called a "data center initiative."
• IBM launched a program of "open source diplomacy,"noting that the biggest business machine deals remain international.
• IBM also announced Chiphopper, a set of support and testing tools for ISVs who want to shift from Windows.
• Novell's SUSE said its Enterprise Server 9 is the first Linux to completeEvaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4+, meaning militaries worldwide can now buy it.
• MySQL announced a new set of subscription models, bringing enterprise-class capacity (and pricing) to Linux databases.
• Trolltech said 20 new Linux cellphones are in the pipeline.
• Red Hat held a dinner to announce its Enterprise Linux Version 4.
• The Free Software Foundation said a new version of the GPL is still three years away, and people cared!
