Illumos begins OpenSolaris divorce proceedings

By | August 4, 2010, 5:55am PDT

Summary: For now it’s just a repository around the shell libraries, a small code base around which a development community could be created.

No one should be surprised by this. Excuse me, this.

Much of what is going on at OpenSolaris is a cry for attention. The code is moribund but its dependents are still out there. The marriage is over but the kids need a place to stay.

So Garratt D’Amore has opened the door on Illumos, with some videos and a “brag” page on the media coverage.

It’s more of a trial separation than a divorce (although in “Porgy & Bess” it took an expert to divorce those who were not married). The wits at The Register call it a spork — not quite a fork.

More like a cry for help, like Snooki’s arrest. For now it’s just a repository around the shell libraries, a small code base around which a development community could be created.

Why? Consider that there are other companies besides Oracle that depend on the technologies around OpenSolaris, such as Nexenta, the storage company for which D’Amore works.

While Oracle and the OpenSolaris board continue to squabble like Heidi and Spencer, those who depend on the code feel like they have to do something.

So maybe this is an intervention. They’re telling Oracle that if it wants to run out the clock on OpenSolaris, kill it by ignoring it, they can take their ball and go elsewhere. (Someone will love me!) But if Oracle wants to put up some money they could, in time, shut up.

That’s what it’s always about, isn’t it? Let’s just admit it and move on.

If it doesn’t seem like I’m taking Illumos seriously, there is a reason. I’m not. In the comments, someone tell me why I should.

My IRA account at Schwab holds a few tech shares, most notably some Intel and Applied Materials, but there are no open source companies in it. I don’t even own any CBS stock.

SONUS Project

A break or fork should have been made one year ago..The IOS project dubbed SONUS has no substance as yet.It is really just a name and a very poor one at that.

You may want to try looking at existing distros on solaris such as Nexenta or stormOS...another professional release is rumoured to be in the pipeline due for a release at the end of the year.
I think you've hit the nail on the head, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take it seriously. The fact that it's backed by Nexenta pretty much proves that. Oracle has not responded to discussions, support requests, or threats -- they've done worse than killing OpenSolaris, they've completely ignored it. It's understandable that the community would come up with Illumos. If Oracle continues their trend of ignorance, everyone's going to start caring about Illumos.

Who Cares?

Illumos is a waste of time. Linux has too much traction and the BSD's have a decent open source licence. I don't wish the project ill but nothing about it excites me at all.

Sad, but not unexpected.

While Solaris is/was my UNIX of choice, at this point there is really no point to worrying about Open Solaris any further. Oracle's behavior so far clearly demonstrates that it feels no investment in maintaining it. It doesn't generate revenue so they simply don't care. They will probably let it lay there hemorrhaging until it finally dies of neglect.

As for everyone who really cares, they will just move off of Oracle/Solaris and onto either DB2/AIX or their favorite SQL atop their favorite Linux distro. The new milena is here in force now, and the dinosaurs are falling fast.

As always, this is just my $0.02 USD based upon a lifetime in the computer field and your opinion may well vary.

Regards,
Jon

More explanation needed.

I use Solaris 10, it came loaded on my home computer when bought it from Sun. I very much like the OS.

I generally like your posts, but this one I don't fully understand. Who is "Snooki"? Who are "Heidi and Spencer". Sorry, I suppose I havn't been keeping up with the personnel at Oracle enough. If you mention people by name in future, please could you provide some explanation?
So first, my name is Garrett D'Amore. Not Garratt.

As to why you should take Illumos seriously; I think a certain amount of hesitance is judicious. However, I can tell you that the immediate massive response I've had -- and not just from hobbyists but from other commercial interests who are building businesses around the technology in OpenSolaris -- now Illumos -- convinces me that that this effort has legs. In fact, the response has been so overwhelming that I've not had time to work on the code the past few days. The reason for this is that there is technology in OpenSolaris (ZFS, DTrace, Zones, Crossbow) which does not have a viable replacement in Linux. And that's just today. Oracle has said they will continue to invest in this code base, and I have good reason to believe that they will.

Its true that the code I put up two days ago is just the start. We have much much more in the pipe. Even more than I first knew, but learned once I started talking to other organizations that have been keeping their own private code base.

So, a certain amount of healthy skepticism or hesitance may be wise; I look forward to surprising and impressing you in the future with both our innovation and growth, and your skepticism now will just make it that much more wonderful when the skepticism is replaced with awe in the future.

Hi Garratt D?Amore,
I am glad to you revive the interest in OpenSolaris. I for one wants OpenSolaris to survive, though I am only a single user, but I can recommend the OS to anyone if it will suit them. I am not a developer, but I am user. I am looking forward to download the latest OpenSolaris in the Illumos.
