Kernel.org shares some cute e-mails

Should the Linux kernel be renamed the Linux “colonel” due to its prowess?

That cute suggestion, which was e-mailed to kernel.org last September, was shared at this week’s LinuxCon by Linux Foundation fellow John “Warthog9″ Hawley, who gave a state of the union on the organization.

Seriously, this is what this person wrote to the webmaster at kernel.org.

“I’ve been using linux for years (since Red Hat  4, i think).  But I just thought - after all this time - why is the “kernel” called that?  A ”kernel” is just a little, potentially not even viable, grain of vegetative material. Why not call it the “Colonel?” A Colonel is almost a flag officer, with semi-executive capabilities, etc. - altogether cooler that a mere “kernel,” which mostly connotes an unpopped grain of corn. Huh?”

No, it doesn’t look like Hawley made it up. He was kind enough to shield the writer’s name.

I’d love for Linus Torvalds to weigh in on that one — as well as this recent blanket e-mail granting Linux the coveted Famous Software Award — one that will be treasured for years.

“Hello, Congratulations!

Your product “Linux Kernel  (http://download.famouswhy.com/linux_kernel/)” has been granted the “Famous Software Award” by Download.FamousWhy.com.

The Famous Software Award has been initiated by  Download.FamousWhy.com to recognize “Famous Software”, which come up with innovative and efficient ways to reflect the best relationship with users assuring their satisfaction.”

The utter ignorance which continually refers to Linux as "communist" must be exposed once and for all.

Do you ever help a friend in need? Have you ever volunteered your time to improve your neighborhood or community? Have you ever taught a child to do something they hadn't done before? By your implied definition YOU are a communist.

Voluntary contribution and collaboration to achieve goals is the opposite of communism. As a political system communism is coerced contribution or state forced labor. By it's very nature it takes away opportunities for voluntary contribution.

The second you are forced at the point of a gun to contribute code to the Linux kernel then and only then will your ignorant jibberish become valid. Until then you're just a fool.

Let's call it socialist then. Strangely that's not a problem for me - in fact nor is communism, The very nature of OSS means that you do not own your code, the community does - I think that is called communism isn't it? If you can try and ignore your obviously emotional reaction to ideological labels then you'll find it doesn't really matter what it's called.

Considering that the word Con has other meanings than convention, I find LinuxCon somewhat appropriate wink

Nice rant but wrong. The fact is that linux is communist because it does force you to open your private code to everyone.

What on Earth?

What on Earth does "colonel" have to do with "communism?"

I don't know about Linux being a "communist" system, I would have thought that "communal" described it better.
