Microsoft's Dana Perino problem with open source

Summary: Is the credibility hole Microsoft has dug itself with the open source community so deep that no one can dig them out?

Dana Perino, Bush Administration press secretaryEvery few years Microsoft gets a new "good cop" regarding open source.

He makes great pronouncements, donates some old code, maybe tosses a few bucks the way of open source.

Then Steve Ballmer opens his yap and we're back to square one.

Eventually people stop listening. That's the problem for current Bush Administration press spokesman Dana Perino (above). We've seen the act, this is no different, she is not taken seriously.

The last is not a political hit. It was true late in the Clinton years, and it's true in many state houses, even mayors' offices. Once reporters know where the wizard is coming from, we don't care about the new explanations, the new spin.

So is Sam Ramji the Dana Perino of Microsoft? Is the credibility hole Microsoft has dug itself with the open source community so deep that no one can dig them out?

Despite his best efforts at OSCON, press reviews do not offer many flattering images:

It's the last that got me thinking of Perino.

I heard her, unscripted, on the NPR show "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" recently. Nice lady. Polite, sincere, and doing her best. But I wouldn't trade places with her for all the tea in China.

Unfortunately there is seldom such a thing as "regime change" at a business like Microsoft. Not unless they want to replace Ballmer with a ponytail.

  • Doing some campaining for the Democrats today?

As all I see is you using your technical blog as a way to talk down the Republicans, maybe "help the cause" a bit?

Oh well, I guess anyone that has to beg for a free Linux laptop might be inclined to take money from other sources... ;)

    • I tried to make it non-political

Why ignore the paragraph saying the same thing happened to Clinton and make a political attack? It's silly.

As to "beg" for a Linux laptop, I want to review what I've been saying is real. Make it real and I'll review it honestly. No begging involved.

      • I thought the 'wink' was a give away

on that part, as were there not a few people accusing you of that?

    • What? He Should Campaign for the Rethugs Instead?

Didn't you hear? They're having trouble raising money this time out! ::happy dance::

  • Unfounded Skepticism (i hope)

I would like to think your doubts are unfounded - but having worked for large companies i know inertia is a powerful force and change is excruciatingly slow. MS support of "open source" may come - but very slowly.

I, for one, liked your "I need a laptop" blog. I would like to see a blog on the problems of taking a laptop on international travel - on the plane, at airports, differences in Europe, Brazil, etc.

"Microsoft's Dana Perino problem with open source".

Throwing the one liner in about Clinton hardly undoes your obvious political bias.

    • Um ... Current Events

He was trying to use a metaphor and chose the most well-known CURRENT political administration for it. If he had chosen Clinton or Bush I, then you could make that accusation. If he had tried to educate us about a lesser-known evil politician, you could probably get away with it, too.

Just because late-night comedians beat Bush II all day and night doesn't make them Democrats. They'll do the same for the next administration, whether it's McCain, Obama, or a third-party candidate. I don't think John Stewart is particularly interested in whether the intended target is Democrat or Republican. Dana is likely the same.

Now, as for Dana calling himself a reporter, that's where I draw the line ;) Just kidding, Dana.

  • maybe M$ will offer Perino a PR job

She is a good fit for BS-ing the media in any organization.
It would just be a change of masters for her.

    • But you sound as though

you would be a superior choice for that position.

There is hardly are larger "BSer" here on these forums then you, Linux Geek.

I should think it was more an allusion to Shakespeare's
Hamlet who used the phrase weighing the measure of
honor in biding bogus times versus doing the big check
    out.

Custer, who went into a battlefield with inferior forces may
seem a more apt allusion, until one looks at the details.
Custer didn't do the proper reconnoitering and disobeyed
general orders, which were to wait for the main body under
General Crook's command. I'm sure Ramji was doing his
job capably and there were no catastrophic losses of
    command expected or realized.

  • People develop BS immunity

I agree with the article. People have become cynical of Microsoft in regard to their Open Source efforts. With passing years, BS and hype have lost their effect on audiences.

  • And in other news...

And in other news, the Writer's Guild of America filed a complaint against Dana Blankenhorn for writing and publishing comedy without a license.

Dana, you crack me up. Keep working on the lighter side. It keeps me young.

    Thanks,

    I object!

Please! let's not be so unfair to Microsoft, in comparing them to such dastardly folks as those that comprise this administration!

  • Please, oh please

Can you please NOT quote Boycott Novell at any time, ever? They're paranoid and most of their musings are either trolls or resulting from poor reading comprehension.

They have nothing credible to say, ever, unless you want to show what the fringe lunatics in the free software community think. Definitely never put them between O'Reilly.and Information Week.

An example of how screwed up they are is the Mono obsession:

  • RE: Microsoft's Dana Perino problem with open source

Picking Dana Perino as an example was worse than political bias: it was a distraction from a decent point: that getting a new mouthpiece every so often doesn't help Microsoft sell themselves as actually interested in the open source software community.

Why pick an example that does nothing to really make your point, and is pretty much guaranteed to offend at least 40% of the population at any time?

Besides, Dana Perino didn't replace Tony Snow as Press Secretary to cover a credibility problem, but because Tony Snow had cancer. Which ended up killing him just about a week ago.

Maybe if you had compared the new spokesman to Baghdad Bob....

        Quotes by anybody and everybody.

I have a small collection of favorites, like these:

"One reason I don't drink is that I want to know when I am having a good time."
        Nancy Astor (1879 - 1964)

Yes, we have to divide up our time like that, between our politics and our equations. But to me our equations are far more important, for politics are only a matter of present concern. A mathematical equation stands forever.
