NTT DoCoMo has a reputation for being one of the smartest wireless carriers on the planet.

So when it starts putting serious money into Linux development, we should take note.

Here are 3 million reasons to take note. NTT has put $3 million into MontaVista of California, which makes a real-time Linux distribution which works well on mobile phones.

How well? Montavista provided the OS for three new phones now making their debut on NTT, from Panasonic and NTT. Two of the phones are dual-mode WiFi-mobile numbers.

The mobile phone OS war is one of those little market conflicts that most of us ignore at our peril. It's interesting. The leader is Symbian, which is closely allied with Nokia. Palm has a push here, with devices like the Treo, and Microsoft is making this a major area of emphasis.

But here, coming along on the outside, with a push from Asia, is our little penguin. Does he have a chance?

I think he does.
