Sun announces GA of mySQL 5.1

By | December 8, 2008, 1:09pm PST

Sun on Monday announced an upgrade of MySQL that offers enhanced partitioning and replication as well as an event scheduler and query analyzer.

MySQL 5.1, which Sun says has been downloaded more than 250,000 times over the past 10 days, offers table and index partitioning as well as row-based and hybrid replication.

The open source database supports five forms of horizontal data partitioning, which translates to faster query response times since it reduces the amount of data that has to be scanned, Sun said.

Replication is another area of significant improvement. MySQL 5.1, features two new forms of replication – row-based and hybrid – which ensures that only changes in the data are replicated and that customers can use either statement based on row-based replication options, respectively.

Version 5.1 also offers a new event scheduler to schedule common SQL tasks and a new query analyzer available to premium subscribers that improves speed and uptime of database application.

Sun purchased the open source database last January for a cool $1 billion. The update is a bit later than expected: Sun originally rolled out mySQL 5.1 in April with plans to deliver it in the second quarter.
