Symbian shutting web sites down

Summary: When I first joined this beat Symbian was the dominant mobile platform. Now the foundation that took the platform open source is shutting its virtual doors.

When I first joined this beat in 2005 Symbian was the dominant mobile platform.

Now the foundation that took the platform open source is shutting its virtual doors.

The lights go out on the Symbian Foundation December 17, the group announced yesterday. The formal announcement was buried on a Friday holiday weekend, although to be fair Nokia is based in Finland.

The decision was made because Symbian is becoming a mere licensing body, thus it doesn’t need the sites. The Twitter feed and Facebook page will also be going bye-bye.

The code itself will be available on a DVD or stick drive upon request after January 31.

Dana Blankenhorn has been a journalist, writer and part-time futurist for over 30 years.

At the present moment I run only a personal blog in addition to my ZDNet open source blog.

DanaBlankenhorn.Com has the subtitle The War Against Oil. In the past I have used it to write about political history, e-commerce, personal matters, some ideas related to open source, and The World of Always On, which is the idea of using sensors, motes and RFID to turn WiFi links into platforms for applications which live in the air.

My IRA account at Schwab holds a few tech shares, most notably some Intel and Applied Materials, but there are no open source companies in it. I don’t even own any CBS stock.

Good day to confirm this comment I would appreciate T h e b e s t o f Z D N e t d e l i v e r e d your website very nice to everyone Yes, Oracle is the only one with shared-disk architecture, but that is there advantage. It means you can add or remove nodes and the database lives on. In a shared nothing architecture, if you lose a node, you lose the system. I'm sure Oracle appreciates EMC highlighting their advantage.I also desire to signal in your RSS feeds. Thank you as soon as once again and maintain up the great operate Awesome post! I wonder is MeeGo is going to take off. If not, Nokia better be looking into adopting Windows Phone 7.

No we don't want one more maker & carrier jointly raping and producing a disabled Android OS while Google sitting helplessly and watching the rape process.

Not going to happen since Android violate tons of patents including Nokia's.

"available on a DVD or stick drive upon request after January 31", in this day and age, it deserves to die. Have they ever heard of downloads? Whoever is going to handle the requests, could surely maintain a small web site or seed a torrent. Sheesh

Not everyone has broadband, though, especially at home. I for one am happy they continue to do this, as Ubuntu does. I know it's a phone OS, but it's still important to make it as available as possible.

(Broadband was made available at my home only in May of this year.)

Funny that symbian still holds the major market share
Dietrich T. Schmitz, ~ Your Linux Advocate 28th Nov 2010
I put careful thought into the decision to replace my aged nokia n95, which still does more than your average smartphone, and came to the conclusion that today Samsung offers the best value.

I went with a Samsung Galaxy S from ATT. Just two words to describe it:

Fing tastik.

@Dietrich T. Schmitz, Your Linux Advocate

I concur. After 10 years with Nokia (I was still very satisfied with my E-71 except for the 320x240) I bought the Galaxy S last month. Android on the Galaxy S is more usable than the iPhone in my opinion.

Then I saw three demo N8's at the local telco shop. I tested them and found them a total disaster! I couldn't believe Nokia could have dare to sell the N8 in its current form given the availability of devices like the Galaxy S, or the Windows Phone 7.
