iPhone satisfaction numbers are unreal

Summary: USA Today's Ed Baig posted a story yesterday reporting on the results of a survey of 1000 new iPhone owners. The numbers are a product manager's (or iCEO's) dream come true. 90% of 200 owners said they were "extremely" or "very" satisfied with their phone. And 85% said they are "extremely" or "very" likely to recommend the device to others.

USA Today's Ed Baig posted a story yesterday reporting on the results of a survey of 1000 new iPhone owners. The numbers are a product manager's (or iCEO's) dream come true. According to the report:

  • 90% of 200 owners said they were "extremely" or "very" satisfied with their phone. And 85% said they are "extremely" or "very" likely to recommend the device to others.
  • Three of 10 buyers were first-time Apple customers. For 40%, iPhone is their first iPod.
  • Half the buyers switched from another carrier. Of those, 35% paid an average $167 to break a contract.
  • IPhone owners surveyed expect to pay about $35 more in monthly service fees compared with their previous cellphones.

Wow. In baseball terms, that's not simply a home run. That's a bottom of the ninth, score tied, game-winning grand slam.

  • Once I bypass the looks and beauty, I'm not satisfied.

    Apple iPhone doesn't have all the features and programs that I need in Windows Mobile 5 that I currently have. It's kind of like using a basic cell phone, plus the ability to browse the Internet, checking for e-mail and listen to music. Yet some cell phones provide an ability to listen to music if it comes with a microSD slot so you can put a 4GB card in your cell phone to listen to music in your phone.

      will get you where you need to go, but I'd rather be in a Corvette, and so would most people, except those who bought a Ford POS and are feeling defensive about it.
      • Interesting analogy, except...

        that the Corvette is supposed to be fast, and I don't recall anyone using that particular word to describe the Iphone. Anyway, I would bet that the Iphone will have about the same market share as you vette in the long run. Most of us actually expect some utility from our devices, be it cell phone or car.
  • Apple's design was spot on

    for the market they targeted. While other smart phones may do
    other tasks it's clear from the survey that the market Apple focused
    on is going to love the iPhone. And that's what really counts -
    make the customer happy and profits will flow in at a nice rate. The
    profitability is going to be far more important than the market
    share percentage.

    Those are pretty good numbers! I wonder if it's too early to conduct a satisfaction
    survey though. I had written shining-praises user reviews on CNet for some devices
    I'd owned, only to reverse my opinion of the device later down the road after I had

    I for one have to question the validity of this survey. My rep took an impromptu survey of Windows Mobile users here at the office. My rep asked 1000 users, "Given the answers are recorded and sent to the CIO, would you buy an iPhone if given the chance?". 0% said yes. Windows Mobile has a pure monopoly here and I do not want it ANY OTHER WAY.

      I don't see what your story has to do with the validity of an independent survey conducted by a professional research firm. Sounds like your CIO is a big MS fan and everyone who works at your company knows it. But I fail to see either the relevance to the topic at hand or any justification for your skepticism.

    Nah can't be true. I mean it has no qwerty keyboard, no 3G, no voice dialing, no GPS, no kitchen sink, and a measly 2MP camera. Why in the world would anyone buy it, and worst be satisfied with their iPhone? Who are these people taking the poll? Do they not care that their iPhones will not play nice with their business Aps?

    Reading some ZDNet bloggers leading up to the launch of the iPhone, you would think there would be mass revolts on the streets with people ready to burn down both Apple and ATT stores.

    What does Apple proves once again? You don't have to follow the status quo to be successful in a market. You may even stand a better chance by releasing a product that's [b]different[/b] (i.e. Nintendo Wii) than releasing yet another clone with slightly better specs. Nintendo (who seem to be inspired by Apple) probable decided they stood a better chance creating a console that was different than competing with Sony and Microsoft on graphics. They needed to create something revolutionary to be relevant again going ahead. The die-hard gamers looking for better graphics laughed at the Wii, even predicting its demised. Now Nintendo is getting the last laugh.

    The iPhone will only get better from here on folks with software updates. That is unless Steve Jobs leaves Apple (or gets fired) and Gill Amelio returns to run the show. ;-)
