Egads! My Droid's been Froyoed!

By | August 4, 2010, 9:03am PDT

Summary: I got a nice surprise this morning after having my coffee and breakfast — Froyo for Droid.

Never mind the fact that my nails need a manicure. I got the Froyo!

This morning, after checking my morning email and having my coffee and breakfast, I picked up my Motorola Droid and noticed a fortuitous message: “A system update is pending, would you like to install it?”

Now, I knew the Android Froyo 2.2 was coming to the Droid this week, but not that early — all accounts were that it was to begin rolling out on August 6, with a small seed group and then to follow on to larger blocks of phones over the next two weeks. Hey, I’m not complaining — but it looks like I might have been singled out.

I haven’t had much time to spend with Froyo yet, but overall, it looks to be a nice enhancement to the stock Verizon Droid software. All my applications and settings were preserved, but it did take longer for the update to apply — approximately 10 minutes, probably due to the amount of apps and data I had on my device.

The new Android 2.2 upgrade preserved all my apps and settings. The new launcher is displayed at the bottom.

A number of 3rd-party apps had to be upgraded immediately, such as Weatherbug and Twitter. A new version of FaceBook is now available which is more streamlined than previous releases and allows for friend requests to be responded to on the device.

The App listing screen is now more streamlined.

While the Adobe Flash Showcase was able to be installed on the device, and was eventually able to use Flash-based apps and videos, as seen in the demonstration above, I had some problems this morning getting Flash itself installed.

CNET News Flash videos playing on the Motorola Droid.

The Flash Player for Android 2.2 wasn’t listed on the Android Market — the Flash Showcase app attempts to install it remotely; I noticed a number of redirect messages and had a few timeouts and Android Marketplace comes up with nothing when the app attempts to load it.

Either Adobe’s or Verizon’s (or perhaps even Google’s) servers were having issues this morning, or I suspect this is evidence of a very early roll-out where one of the three companies was not entirely prepared.

The Adobe Flash Showcase for Android and Mobile Devices.

Luckily, a nice Twitterer offered the official Flash binary up for download on his Dropbox site for me to test it out. I expect either Adobe, Verizon or Google to resolve the server issues today or tomorrow, however.

[UPDATE: Apparently, you can manually install the Droid Froyo update if it hasn't been pushed to you yet. Click on this link for instructions.]

Apparently that is what the update was delayed for after Jason got it. I downloaded and updated my phone from the same release he got, and tethering is included.

Verizon must have realized the mistake and stopped the update to remove the feature.

@babyboomer57 I believe the "official" rollout begins August 6. As I understand there was a very small "test" sent out late last night to only a few thousand phones. So I either lucked out and was selected, or Verizon identified me and sent it to me early.

dock screens?
cabdriverjim 4th Aug 2010
Any changes to the dock screens? I keep hoping they'll do something with the car dock screen. Car mode seems a bit slapped together and it got no attention at all in the last update. It only needs a few tweaks, really.

@cabdriverjim the Car Home has a more streamlined look. Instead of the arc-shaped navigation bar it has six large buttons: Navigate, Voice Search, Phone, Contacts, Music, Exit Car Mode.

@cabdriverjim The multimedia dock screen is totally different. It now overlays your chosen background instead of using the blah brown background. Much nicer.

@Robert Kunz If you download the update.zip from the link above, you don't need to root your phone to install Froyo.

I've heard lots of hype about wifi hotspot and tethering lately. What's the real story from somebody with the 2.2 update?

Not that it relates to Sprint users, but I have 2.2 on my Nexus One on T-Mobile, and I can use USB and Mobile Hotspot tethering unlimited... and I don't pay an extra dime on my T-Mobile bill.

@NewtoDROID USB tethering works. DROID has some firmware issues related to the Wi-Fi hotspot stuff, so it can't do it yet.

@jperlow /Does the USB tethering require an app from the market? BTW, Verizon is my carrier.

No app required. Plug in the DROID then got to settings>Wireless & Networks>Tethering & Portable Hotspot and check USB tethering. You will be tethered.

You are spreading a false rumor. Verizon has publicly stated the Droid will NOT get Tether or Hot Spot. It is all over their customer service forum and their Twitter/Facebook.

The Droid X and Droid 2 will be getting both though, and it will only be a $20/month service not free.

The WiFi hotspot is crucial to me! I have the original Motorola Droid. Are you saying I can't do it? Do you think eventually I will be able to? When? LOL Thanks any info appreciated!

hey dude - piece of advice for ya.... at least groom your hands if your going to do a video, knowing that your hands look like shrek's and you have chicken stuck under your nails from your arcaic way of eating costco chicken ( no forks, just hands, pulling apart like a savage)

I personally couldnt get past that... I think I just threw up in my mouth...

Thanks for that... lol

It's the Camera!
i2fun@... 5th Aug 2010
@cfithian@... Not really Jason's fault. HD camera's make everything look gross. Because the detail they reveal is better than what our eyes see. I do lots of HD video and you'll swear what you see in the video wasn't there when you shot it. That's why a Professional always microscopically combs through any close content and background. Otherwise even bugs you can't see show up!

btw... if you seriously "threw up", you got some obsessive/compulsive issues to deal with in some therapy sessions! ....but hopefully you're just exaggerating. If not..... WOW.... just wow you've got problems man!!!

Is the Clock application updated at all? The icon from your picture looks updated, and it's now called "Clock" evidently rather than "Alarm Clock." Also, how did you take screenshots without being rooted? All of the screenshot apps I've seen require a root.

The link for manual updating mentioned above: http://www.nexeo.net/?p=488, do we know that is the official version from verizon? How do we know it is not a modded version?

@brisc4 It's definitely the official as I installed it on my wife's Droid. However, because of the Flash problem I described above, a new version of the update is going to be rolled out next week, so this week's rollouts are going to be delayed. Apparently it has something to do with the OS signature on the Droid Froyo build and how it identifies itself to Android Market.

@jperlow Thanks! Will the download verzion above DEFINITELY be upgradable when the new OTA one comes out?

The current build that rolled out did not update the Market identifier so you will never see 2.2 apps. Moto is working on a fix that will hopefully rollout next week.

At least you Droid folks are getting upgraded. I'm sitting here with my Motorola Cliq, stuck at 1.5, and all the apps I need or want work on only 1.6 and above.

Before I bought the phone, I made sure and talked with Motorola and T-Mobile customer service, both assured me that the OS was upgradable and would be. Android 1.6 passes by, nothing. 2.0 comes and goes, nothing. Finally, Motorola lists 2.1 for Q2. On 8/1 it changed to "Testing" with no date. I'm beginning to think I wasted my money on another un-upgradeable brick.

@CptMatt I really think Motorola likes the cliq like Frankenstein likes his monster. I guess one key difference is Motorola just passive-aggressively hangs the updates just out of your reach above your head, rather than trying to slaughter you all. and lets be thankful for that...

Any chance there is finally an app for syncing Outlook (contacts etc) with Google? This has been the biggest missing link. Something like the HTC Sync would be great.

I Froyo'd myself!
dwells401 5th Aug 2010
Not being a person of extreme (or any) patience, I updated myself as soon as I saw the link. Noticeable performance improvement, my existing apps, settings, etc., match that of the author. Since I was somewhat initially underwhemled, I did a hard reset to get a getter benchmark. Using OOB settings, I was and am impressed with the boost. One glitch I encountered was getting the GPS to talk to Google Maps Navigation. At first, no luck. After going into Google Maps with GPS on, I selected My Location, and once found, the nav software worked fine. Worth it? Yep, even if I was jumping the gun. Oh well, I did the same with my Storm. Battery life is better, I like the default 5 screens, along with the mini-bloat from VZW. I am going to put this through its paces before Droid 2 comes out, and see whether or not the hardware upgrade is worth a new contract.

Pulling chicken apart "like a savage"...hmmm.....don't know any other way to ENJOY eating it.

Anyway, I've read on another forum that the router hardware IS in the Droid's WiFi chip, but that TI hasn't gotten around to updating the firmware to make it work with FroYo hotspot interface. So for the moment third-party ad-hoc mode app is the only way to go with this.

Nice to know everything else is there. I presume both functions WILL be enabled in both the Droid X and Droid Incredible (DInc) when these updates roll out. Can't wait till the Droid 2 shows up with USB tether, WiFi hotspot, Flash, keyboard, the whole enchillada.
