Based on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' comments on the third quarter results for the company, Kindle sales are accelerating. Bezos is quoted: “Kindle has become the #1 bestselling item by both unit sales and dollars – not just in our electronics store but across all product categories on Amazon.com. It’s also the most wished for and the most gifted.”

Working from my previous estimate, 783,000 as of July 1, and building in unit volume growth of 60 percent—sales revenue gains in electronics in the U.S., $217 million higher in the first three quarters of 2009 than in 2008, seems to be driven heavily by Kindle sales—I estimate Amazon has sold 1,072,000 Kindles as of Sept. 30, 2009. That would be 289,000 Kindles sold during Q3.

  • your estimate is based on your old estimate?

Did amazon themselves breakout their Kindle sales? If they didn't, that
means it's not selling well. If they did sell a million of them they
would've announced it, no? A million is the number that companies
    like to brag about.

Even Microsoft couldn't wait to announce the 'millionth sale' of their
failed zune (though they were sitting in stockrooms and later in
bargain basement bins; microsoft was counting sales to Best Buy, etc,
    not to consumers)

Kindle might be the best selling, and most wished for item on THEIR
site (since they are the only place that sells it), not in general, as iPods
alone outsell them what, 20 to 1?

    Amazon is making the Kindle sales sound much better than they are;
its all on how you paint the picture. There isn't any critical thinking
going on nowadays by bloggers so people just report what a CEO
    states without questioning it.

I didn't repeat what Bezos said, Shaz. I've been tracking
Kindle unit sales since it launched and, as explained, based
on a percentage of CE revenues reported, have been able
to keep track, I believe, fairly accurately. My estimates are
lower than most of the analysts out there and likely more
    realistic.

Amazon has never reported unit sales. That doesn't mean
it isn't selling well, it means Kindle sales aren't iPhone big.
1.07 million units in two years is not a hyped number.

Of course my previous estimate plays into the current
estimate, because it is an estimate based on analysis of
revenues, not announced unit sales. We can only estimate
    because Amazon doesn't report sales.
