Will the cloud replace SMB IT departments?

By | January 23, 2012, 2:24am PST

Summary: ZDNet’s Christopher Dawson and Heather Clancy tee off on this week’s Great Debate.

Cloud computing is an increasingly important reality for small and medium business but will it ever be able to totally replace traditional on-premise applications?

That’s the subject of ZDNet’s Great Debate this week with Christopher Dawson and Heather Clancy taking opposite sides on a topic that many SMBs have probably already considered.

Dawson claims that SMB decision-markers are too busy to pay as close attention as they should to their business technology.  He says the cloud takes away the worry so owners and managers can spend more time actually thinking about their business.

On the other side is Clancy who says IT actually becomes more important to small and medium businesses in a cloud environment.  She feels that cloud computing requires strong supervision to provide both business and technical oversight.

RE: Will the cloud replace SMB IT departments?

The Cloud will not replace the SMB IT departments but it has already changed them. SMB IT departments are getting leaner and more focused on selecting the right technologies/vendors and more involved with the deployment of these technologies and less involved with the daily maintenance, upgrade and support of technologies used. They are therefore becoming more strategic to the business and less tactical in maintaining technology and related operations.

However, it will change them. The job will still require a good knowledge of IT infrastructure, but the job will be more about vendor management than hands on experience.

Case in point ... I outsource my domain hosting. After poor customer service and increasing outages, I recently transferred the domain to a new host. Most of it went fine but we ran into a SMTP glitch. Because I have a working knowledge of the infrastructure and was able to do some focused tests from my end and provide relevant information, the new vendor was able to identify not only that it was their issue, but how to solve it within a couple hours versus many days if they had had to prompt me on what kinds of tests I should do and give them meaningful results.
will boys i will tell you all something any company that puts info in the cloud is nuts
it has been hacked again and again and again and the people are not been told about it so if any one put my info in the cloud i am going to sue them big time i do not want my info stole again and i will use all of my resouces to stop it i am tired of it and if i can not stop it then i will have my internet turn off for good
Will it replace IT departments is perhaps (with respect) the wrong question. Will it replace traditional IT might be more relevant. And the answer is yes. Cloud will replace traditional on-premise IT. But there will still be a need for people to administer and deal with the complexities of connecting to and managing multiple IT environments. Will this be the same IT people we have today? Unlikely. We will need people who understand multiple connections to multiple market places, payment gateways, social media sites etc to a back end business system that holds our stock ledgers, general ledgers, CRM etc. And much of this connection will require initial set up and ongoing monitoring.
