Sybase 365 - Over One Trillion Served (Take That McDonalds!)

In less than a decade, Sybase 365 has served up more piping hot mobile messages than McDonalds has served up hamburgers in its six decades. The mobile messaging and commerce services subsidiary said Tuesday it has now delivered more than 1 trillion inter-operator text and picture messages (SMS and MMS, respectively) since launching its first SMS interoperability messaging hub in 2001.

The mobile messaging and commerce services subsidiary said Tuesday it has now delivered more than 1 trillion inter-operator text and picture messages (SMS and MMS, respectively) since launching its first SMS interoperability messaging hub in 2001.

(For the truly curious, McDonalds has served "more than 99 billion" since the mid-1990s, when it stopped counting hamburger sales. Some estimate that the company sells about 1 billion hamburgers a year.)

Sybase acquired the then-Mobile 365 in November 2006. Today, Sybase 365 helps deliver more than 1.5 billion mobile messages a day.

So while it took almost 8 years to get to 1 trillion messages, Sybase 365 should get to 2 trillion messages in 2012 based on current traffic growth.
While SMS has long been talked about as a going-out-of-fashion legacy technology, the fact is that traffic is still growing fast.
In the first 3 months of 2010, 1.475 trillion messages were sent worldwide. By the end of 2010, 6.5 trillion messages will have been sent, according to estimates by my colleague William Dudley based on Informa figures. Check out this new Sybase video for more similar stats and factoids.
