    There is so much spam and malware on facebook via its apps that its unbelievable. But the facebook team does seem to stay on top of it, because nothing lasts for too long.

      @Jimster480 ignore all the apps and you will be fine. At least as fine as you can be with FB changing their privacy policy every couple of months.

        @Al_nyc Yea, over time I have been ignoring apps more and more. They just become annoying.

      @Jimster480 I would argue the exact opposite - that the FB team is frighteningly slow to respond to these issues. I've seen sites tied to obvious scams like this last for days, and scam profiles last for months, despite having been reported. Do a search on FB for "Grace Tailgatin' Irwin" and see what I mean.

      Unless the take-down time can be measured in minutes, these scams have a significant impact on users who are susceptible to them. You really need to prevent them from seeing the bait in order to have any luck of preventing damage.

        @ejhonda I have to agree with you, @ejhonda. There is another page called "The Bulldog Estate" that had information and "cures" for the viruses propagated by these hackers 2-3 weeks before Facebook finally gave their "Houston, we have a problem" statement. They keep putting statements out about how good the security is and yet they can't adequately fight the hackers.

        @ejhonda You would also have to realise that this site is running 24/7 and serving millions of people at any one time.

        Compare this to a team of only a handful of HUMAN people at Facebook trying to process every complaint and spam reports to shut down those rogue pages. Even if they have automated scripting to do the work for them, its still quite a feat. The only way to combat spam is to tell people not to click on random stuff (although that usually falls on deaf ears).

        Most of the larger outbreaks do get shut down pretty fast within hours, as I've noticed one time.

      • If the issue is Apps...

        Then why is there no App approval process? I just love the fact that by using the Apps you also enable sharing of profile data... Good enough reason to install only the most required apps.<br>There's also another scam/viral post regarding a "video containing a mention of you" or similar that posted this week. My name gets a mention in <I>"Superbad"</I>, & I thought a friend had just discovered it - but thankfully decided to check with him before clicking through the post.<br>I completely agree that FB don't do enough to stop this type of scam...

      • App approval

        @mattmuir
        But App approval is the tool of closed, walled garden corporations that won't let you do what you really want with the hardware you paid for! ;)

        App approval is a lose-lose prospect (lose if you don't, lose if you do) from the PR side of things. Very said, but also very real

        @ejhonda Well true, if its not minutes. But with the amount of users on facebook, its hard to find scams like that in minutes. You have to be realistic. I have run a few large sites in the past, and even with 10k+ users it becomes very hard to manage things in real time.
        BTW I also have a Honda, a turbo EJ8 actually :)

      I don't run any facebook apps. Anything that asks me for a password is trouble.

    Can they provide a single setting which disables ALL the crap-apps?<br><br>(I don't like those horoscope apps/xyz-villa games nor those "who is your biggest fan" type apps)

        Why would anyone in their "right mind" even bother with Farcebook. I haven't, and I doubt that I am missing anything of importance.

      @thandermax
      are there any good "apps" in facebook?
      thschmid
      • RE: 'Checkout Your PROFILE Stalkers' scam spreading on Facebook

        @thschmid there a handful of utility like apps, but the piffle and fluff are by far the rule...

        it is a good idea to go to privacy setting and seriously winnow all but essentials. the operand issue is not clicking on any spam links, they are like poison oak...
