Malicious hackers are preying on iPhone users who want to jail-break their devices, exploiting the increased interest around jail-breaking tools to launch malware attacks.

According to Kaspersky Lab's Costin Raiu (see disclosure), a rumored jail-breaking utility for iPhone 4 comes with a nasty surprise:

Cybercriminals have definitely been riding the buzz around the supposed jailbreaking tool. It's presumed to be called "Greenpois0n" and it's expected to be released any day now. Not surprisingly, we've seen a number of fake "Greenpois0n" Trojans.

If you search for the Greenpoison on torrent sites you might be in for a surprise:

Raiu said all the existing "greenpois0n" archives at the moment contain Trojans designed to steal passwords and other private data from infected systems.

In addition to the Trojans, Raiu also found fake (rogue) jail-breaking websites hawking tools that pretends to can jailbreak any version of iPhone with any version of iOS. The average cost for these is $25-$40.

    Rule of thumb concerning jailbreaking methods - if it;s not from the Dev Team and not free it's a hoax at best and a source of malware at worst.

In the old English law it means "you can not beat your wife with anything thicker then your thumb". Look it up.
Glad I'm not your wife.........................

        First, you need to learn to spell if you are going to act so knowledgeable as to be able to criticize and correct other peoples choice of terms or phrases. Your point, though it may be accurate, is lost when you appear to be an idiot because you can't spell the words you write correctly. You are trying to point out how another person is inaccurate when you can't even spell well enough to do so.

  • "a rumored jail-breaking utility"

    You know, it's rumored that Elvis is alive and working at a 7-11 in Minnesota, frequenting karaoke on the weekends. Get back to us when you've got more than rumors, eh?

      @jasonp@...

      rumor also has it when you hold these phones a certain way, the signal starts dropping.

        Good one, but not the latest finding.

        The new iPhone problem is that if you hold your finger in front of the camera lens, the picture is affected. WTF is up with that?!? Windoze Phone 7 will no doubt not have this DEFECT! Why can't the stupid iPhone see right through my fingers? I refuse to buy any more iPhone 4's until they fix this serious hardware problem. LOL, you guys crack me up. Shut up and go clean your registries, delete some DLL files, people are not going to stop buying iPhones, so you should just get over it.

      • Ah, yes,

        @Comp_indiana

...proving yet again, that if you bring up a competitor's product - whether it's Windows, Blackberry,or Android - then all the sudden any flaw your Apple product has 'magically' disappears.

Maybe one day the rest of the world will catch up, and be able to fix their hardware/software with the mere mention of a competitor's product.

      • RE: Fake iPhone jail-breaking tool packed with malware

        @comp_indiana Except the issue isn't attenuation and not common to other manufactures, it's detuning by changing the antenna's length, which is why no one has reported an issue like this in the past for other iPhones.

    • You Read That Wrong

      The rumor is that it is a jail-breaking utility. It does exist, and "all the existing ?greenpois0n? archives at the moment contain Trojans."
