Google adds warnings for suspicious GMail activity

By | March 24, 2010, 12:11pm PDT

Summary: Google has added a nifty new security feature to warn GMail users when there are suspicious log-ins to their e-mail accounts.

Google has added a nifty new security feature to warn GMail users when there are suspicious log-ins to their e-mail accounts.

The feature, now being rolled into Firefox and Internet Explorer, will flag GMail log-ins from multiple locations and flash the following warning to an affected user:

“Warning: We believe your account was last accessed from…[location and IP address]“

According to GMail engineer Erwin D’Souza, GMail will also provide more details on logins in an account activity window:

This provides a look at all GMail log-in activity over a recent time period and lets the user know whether the account was accessed by a regular Web browser, a mobile device, or via POP3 or IMAP.   It also provides a quick glance at the user’s current IP address to help match up against possible suspicious log-ins.

Given the appalling service that they give (easily as bad as Hotmail) especially if you run Opera, it makes me wonder why use them at all.
Lycos and Yahoo email services are excellent by comparison.
I have found myself locked out of both my old gmail and hotmail accounts and I have stopped using them. Oddly neither Google nor Microsoft have closed my old accounts, as I asked, so probably the hackers are using them.
C'est la vie - they have to maintain the accounts - I can't be bothered anymore.

But their government cares even less about what's
right than ours does.

edit:

Mods, wtf? Why do you keep deleting posts I
replied to and then leaving mine sitting out
here looking looking out of context? sad
