Hackers for charity group puts tech skills to work for a cause

Summary: Well, this may be old news to some, as Johnny Long is pretty well known for his Google hacking exploits, but I thought it was worth bringing up again as it was news to me. In July of 2007, Johnny started a group called "Hackers for Charity", with the goal of applying the skills of the hacking community to charitable organizations that need those skills.

Johnny I Hack StuffWell, this may be old news to some, as Johnny Long is pretty well known for his Google hacking exploits, but I thought it was worth bringing up again as it was news to me.

In July of 2007, Johnny started a group called "Hackers for Charity", with the goal of applying the skills of the hacking community to charitable organizations that need those skills.

The group has already had some wonderful success stories, such as donating laptops and equipment to places in need, performing a re-code and security assessment of the AOET.org web application, and raising money from donations.  In fact, Johnny and his family have actually been involved in taking trips to Uganda to deliver school supplies and setup a computer classroom using some of the donations received.  Wouldn't it be wonderful to see a lot more big companies on that list of donors?

Taxes are almost due, so if there's anyone out there that's looking to make a few more charitable contributions to bring those taxes down, what a great opportunity this is.  Go donate some of your old hardware, money, and time.  It's great to see the community get behind a cause such as this one.

  • A quicker idea...

Why not just hack into a large bank's EFT system and funnel it to the charity? ;-)

Or are you just not familiar with the concept of a "wink"?

Wow Been_Done_Before, normally your comments are really solid. I have to strongly disagree with you on this one. The whole point of what Johnny is doing is to help others... we aren't talking about hacking into companies to steal money to help people (Robin Hood style) or something like that.
