Italy's tax department posted every Italian's declared earnings and tax contributions on a site that was quickly overwhelmed by onlookers.

According to the BBC:

There has been outrage in Italy after the outgoing government published every Italian's declared earnings and tax contributions on the internet.

The tax authority's website was inundated by people curious to know how much their neighbors, celebrities or sports stars were making.

The Italian treasury suspended the website after a formal complaint from the country's privacy watchdog.

The information was put on the site with no warning for nearly 24 hours.

The release of the information was one of the last acts of the outgoing centre-left government and has shocked many tax-shy Italians, says the BBC's Mark Duff in Milan.

But it was also hugely popular, and within hours the site was overwhelmed and impossible to access.

Can you imagine if the IRS did this?

According to the CIA Factbook, Italy has a population of about 58 million. Even if Italy's tax records only covered half the population that's a hefty number.

  • HAAHAHAHA omg thats funny

Bet the come out saying it was a mistake.

Ok, so a co-worker... but if they work a second job or do ocasional work for someone then you really wont know what they make.

People are curious so its no suprize the site went down though.

    • Information does me a lot of good

I get to know exactly how I stand with my salary versus others in the same job.

Also, I know exactly what others are making in any jobs I want to target to move to. None of this salary range crap where you get lowballed by the company anymore.

Finally, it makes it 100% transparent which groups of tax payers are getting the shaft. Which means the voters can put pin point pressure on congress to specifically change the bogus tax laws that favor making the rich richer and screwing the rest of us.

      • Information is actually useful, but

        should be anonymous!
Imagine you run a home robbing racket, which of course is illegal but happens to be a big problem in Italy, now you have a perfect tool, select the top 100 taxpayers in your area, bring them up on googlemaps, observe the locations a couple of days and then start breaking in.
Many Italians are already talking about suing former minister Visco and the whole former government for breaching the privacy laws, I think they should and hope they will.

Socialist don't believe in the privacy of the individual. They probably all use Google services as well.

Tax "contributions" ? First time I heard that one was in the USA during the Clintoon Admin. "Contribution" implies a voluntary action. The question for the Italians as it was for the Americans is; "How, exactly, does one "contribute" or perform any "voluntary" action at the point of a gun?
