The Opera Web browser has undergone a minor security makeover with one significant improvement — the ability to update itself when patches are released.

The latest browser update will, by default, notify the user about available updates in very much the same way Mozilla Firefox handles automatic patching.

From the changelog:

Users can specify that snapshot build releases of Opera should be downloaded by enabling “Download All Snapshots” in opera:config. Users can also choose not to check for updates or to automatically install updates by going to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Security and changing the “Opera update level” (select box) to the: “Automatically install updates” setting.

The latest Opera update also adds support for TLS 1.2, a full set of padlock icons for security dialog box, and a new feature to handle anti-spoof checking.

It also fixes the following security problems.

  • Issue where sites using revoked intermediate certificates might be shown as secure; see advisory.
  • Issue where the collapsed address bar didn’t show the current domain; see advisory.
  • Some IDNA characters not correctly displaying in the address bar; see our advisory.
  • Issue where Opera accepts nulls and invalid wildcards in certificates; see our advisory.
  • Recognizing EV certificates issued directly from the Root.

Autoupdaters are the trojan viruses
privacy matters 3rd Sep 2009
Autoupdaters are the trojan viruses lurking inside your computer and creating backdoors for viruses and hackers. After installing Adobe readers, I got hacked and had to reinstall operating system and s/w from scratch. Of course, I lost data as well. Boycot auto updaters!

The article says "The latest browser update" but it doesn't say exactly which version of Opera. When I went to opera.com to find out, I saw a big announcement about version 10.0, so I guess that's it...

Still not good enough to ever want me to use their software again. After what they pulled whining and crying to the EU over Microsoft I'm surprised they are even bothering to continue developing it. I know I will not be trying this Opera 10 or any other version of Opera. Me plus all the others boycotting Opera, things are not looking good for them.

Boycott Opera!

Boycott your arse!

This is plain stupid.

Opera has more than 40 million users. So why they bother?

market share.
Did you hear the loosers actually expect the whole world to get the EU version of Windows. Opera is either on its knees or at your throat. Microsoft should have shipped the OS browserless. Let them go to command line or Media Player to get a browser. Euroweenies.

So I assume you only use IE

Since every other major browser was on Opera's
side in the legal battle. Oh, and how dare they
want Microsoft to play by the rules of the EU? HOW
DARE THEY?!

Funny enough

the people who boycott Opera, or talk about it,
are the ones that aren't likely to use it in the
first place. XD

If only Opera had access to the plethora of add-ons
mhenriday Updated - 4th Sep 2009
that Firefox does, it would certainly be a serious competitor. It has a minimalistic GUI that reminds one of Chrome and is quick and light and in my experience, very reliable. It certainly merits a larger share of the market than it presently enjoys in Europe - 7.2 % (http://preview.tinyurl.com/klxz9n ) - or worldwide - 2.7 % (http://preview.tinyurl.com/na4b92 ). Give it a try !...

opera's zoom and 'fit to page' makes it best browser ever.

I don't know why it needs any add-ons. Most of anything anybody would want is already there. And then some. Wanna' change skins ? One click. Firefox has to be restarted. Wanna' zoom to read text ? Firefox really needs an add-on for that. Good luck. The only thing it's missing for me is a spell checker for web based E-mail. I use Firefox for that and only that.

I've been using Opera 10 for about 3 weeks and I'm sold. Not a glitch or hic-up, fast and less than half the ram drain than IE. Give it a shot!
