Wonder which is the most popular lockscreen PIN?

Daniel Amitay, the developer of the Big Brother Camera Security iPhone app has been collecting aggregate data on the use of lockscreen PINs of users of his application. Based on a sample of 204,000 passcodes, here are the most popular passcode choices:

• 1234
• 0000
• 2580
• 1111
• 5555
• 5683
• 0852
• 2222
• 1212
• 1998

Not surprisingly, the ubiquitous 1234 occupies the top position. The research data further examines the connection between the passcode choice and the different numbers, and find out that "with a 15% success rate, about 1 in 7 iPhones would easily unlock--even more if the intruder knows the users’ years of birth, relationship status, etc"

The research data excludes password re-use patterns, therefore it's fairly logical to assume that the same insecure passcode choosing patterns can be seen elsewhere as well.

• Idiots

Simply idiots. Anybody using passcodes like those, probably deserve to get hacked, if for no other reason than to learn NOT to use such simple passcodes.

Do they use the same ones for their banking?

I leave my door unlocked too. Do I deserve to be broken into?

• If you do not take even the simplest precautions,....

given that humanity is what it is, then maybe you do.

• RE: The most common iPhone passcodes

@Economister Then you have no idea how easy it is to break-in to your average American locked door. Nothing like a good sense of false security there.

Next time your laying in your bed Econo, thinking of those poor fools with unlocked doors - if a thief is planning on breaking into your house, he doesn't really care if your door is locked or not... whats that? did you hear something?

@Bodazapha This was interesting article. I guess it is smart to change the passcodes every once in a while. Extenze Reviews

• RE: The most common iPhone passcodes

I think it's extremely dangerous for a company to be publishing this information. At what point is the company liable for negligence for publishing the most used pin codes by its user base? I can see hackers doing this, they need proof that they hacked something. But a legitimate business throwing its users under the bus like this? Unconscionable.

They should be privately talking to their users not in public.
Ram U
• You give Apple too much credit.

@swmace

It doesn't matter whether they announce that info publicly or not.

The iPhone is so lax in security, if someone has local access to the phone, all they have to plug it up and run one of many tools that will easily crack the phone.

• LMAO!!!

"1,2,3,4... That's the kind of thing an idiot puts on his luggage!"

Even back in the 80's, Mel Brooks knew iDiots would buy iPhones.

• RE: The most common iPhone passcodes

You do know this is the passcode to the app NOT the phone, right?

Yes, I agree most people will use the same code, but at least report correctly. The app is NOT recording the iOS passcode.
