ZoneAlarm is prechecking a toolbar--which could be seen as crapware--when it is installed.

The issue, highlighted by SunBelt Software, creates quite a cycle. Security vendor bundles in a toolbar with its software--and hopes you don't unclick the option. Then that toolbar is targeted. More malware arrives. Then the security company sells you more software to thwart the toolbar it just installed. Sure security companies that offer free software need to make some dough too, but prechecking a questionable toolbar (image courtesy of Sunbelt) isn't a good way to go.

The Ask toolbar has a checkered history as it is. Needless to say the comments to SunBelt's blog weren't complimentary.

Also see how to fully de-gunk your PC of crapware.

  • They're not the only ones

If it's not Apple trying to get me to use Itunes, just because I decided I might use their loaded with exploits Quicktime, it's some other software vendor trying to install the Yahoo or Google toolbar - all of them checked. Even slow and clumsy Java isn't content with its weekly bug fix updates and wants to offer me a slow not quite right copy of MS Office.

This now appears to be standard - have as much crapware as possible attached to a product and make sure they're all pre checked so the unwary can load up their computer with even more useless software.

    • And ironically

it seems to be a problem that only exists on Windows platforms... hmm curious. ]:)

unlike Linux osx and windows are made to be able to install software with ease.

unlike Linux where if you want something thats not given to you in the program manager you have to go back to the 90's and open up a command line to install it.

on some distros of Linux the ol goggle tool bar is happily placed on firefox so no tool bars are not just a windows phenom.

tool bars or crap wear can be installed on every os it's just essayer to install on windows and mac osx. remember a toolbar is installed by the user not the os maker ;)

      • Yeah now move on

it's becoming tiring to frame everything in a MS vs Linux context.

        • ZonaAlarm is becoming disappointing

It used to be a great product. Unfortunately, ever since the German maker sold its product to an American company, all released versions have become more and more bloated to the point of approaching the King of Bloat, Symantec. To me, ZA is unusable now.

Sad they've now already reached the stage of including spyware. It shows the ultimate victory of the marketeer-farts over the tech-programmers.

Isn't that the Windows "ecosystem" people talk about. I'm glad I'm not on that train wreck.

  • Thanks for the heads-up, Larry

Used on my last two remaining Windows
computers. I may have to get rid of
that too. It's getting pretty stinky.

Hopefully, I will soon be able to
shut down Windows for the last time,
for good. Then they can have it, I
don't care what they do. Of course,
the worse they make it, the more work
    for computer techs, eh?

Trouble is, I already have more than
I can handle, and don't need their
    garbage.

How do I get rid of that toolbar? I confess I let the click stay checked and now I'm doomed unless I can get rid of it.

I hate to say that once most American company touches something it needs to marketed and bloated objects that the original good object is hidden away.

And it disables Firefox from opening any further windows. Wish I had read your article first. I thought I could trust ZA. Not.
