Summary: CSC: 'We like to think of ourselves as the Merlot of cloud.'

With the rise of cloud sources, outsourcing is entering a whole new dimension. Just as non-IT companies may find themselves in the cloud business, classic IT providers also are changing their game.

Silicon Angle's Alex Williams recently spoke to Pam Casale, director of global cloud marketing for CSC, the big systems integrator, about her company's evolution to cloud services provider. CSC's new cloud services are similar to Amazon Web Services, but targeted to larger enterprises that need high-value or premium services.

As Williams describes it:

"This 50-year-old consulting giant is going through some changes of its own. These days it is acting in some ways like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and less like its counterparts in the consulting world. 'We like to think of ourselves as the Merlot of cloud,' said Pam Casale, director of global cloud marketing for CSC."

CSC's BizCloud features its CSC CloudCompute architecture, offering SaaS, PaaS and infrastructure services through an integrated technology that combines VMware virtualization, Cisco networking and EMC storage. BizCloud will be supported by 12 data centers across the globe.

Very Disconcerting Trend

Although they have the scale to do "private clouds" right, I am concerned about their fiduciary responsibility to their clients. Will they be able to guide their clients to the right mix of cloud services or will they steer all of their clients to their one-size-fits-all offering?

So what else is new

CSC was a "cloud provider" before many people here were born. They ran a huge nationwide time-sharing service called InfoNet that ran on, IIRC, Univac 1108s. I don't think they've been out of the data center business since.

  Yes, Univac 1108s, and then upgraded to 1180s in the early 80's. The Infonet network was actually international in scope, and appealed to a lot of multi-nationals because of the reach of the network. I worked as a CSR in the 70's and did about a decade of sub-contracting on that service in the 80's, although half of that work was migrating off the timesharing network to PC-based apps.

loud computing providers deliver applications via the internet, which are accessed from a web browser, while the business software and data are stored on servers at a remote location. Management consultants generally bring their own, proprietary methodologies or frameworks to guide the identification of problems, and to serve as the basis for recommendations for more effective or efficient ways of performing work tasks.-<a href="www.slideshare.net/guy-riordan">Guy Riordan</a>
