Quotes of the Week:

“Oracle is damned if they do and damned if they don’t, so it figured it might as well do and try to get paid.  There’s just tons and tons of potential money in this. But it’s bad news for Java regardless of the outcome.”

-Gartner analyst Mark Driver, quoted in CNN report on Oracle’s lawsuit against Google for patent infringement on use of Java platform in its Android device. Context: Oracle’s options were to watch the success of Android from the sidelines, or to take the risk of litigation.

“Google’s mistake is it has acted like a runaway dog in a nighttime meat factory, with it fangs into everything but with very little fully ingested.”

Java witnesses
jorwell Updated - 14th Aug 2010
Funny coincidence that, we had the Java witnesses around a couple of days ago saying "have you heard about Java? Are you ready to let Java into your life?"

I showed them a one terabyte database that I then accessed with SQL and they ran away screaming, "help, global data and he is accessing it without using a multi-tier, object-relation-mapping, enterprise service bus based architecture, the sky is falling! The sky is falling!"

I'm not saying that this is the best way to deal with these people, but it seemed to be quite effective.

...but then they came back again

This time they wanted us to use something called Hibernate.

Apparently this is so called because the people who invented it slept through the whole of their logic course and consequently don't understand that it is logically absurd to attempt to map a type to a relation.

The also talked about something called a persistence layer. They said I could use a relational database for this.

I went to my local computer store and asked if they had a relation I could store my data in. They told me "a relation is an abstract mathematical concept, you can't store data in that, you need a disk drive mate".

I tried explaining to the Java witnesses that a relational database is a purely logical representation of the data and knows nothing about how it might stored physically, but when I used the word logic the Java witnesses replied "sorry we don't speak Greek, only Geek".

So I must commend Larry Ellison's effort to contain the Java contagion to within his own company and halt its spread to the wider community.

It's going to come down to
Dietrich T. Schmitz, ~ Your Linux Advocate 14th Aug 2010
either Oracle has a case and cross-licensing will ensue or
Google has done a good job bypassing JME with Dalvik:

I am wagering Oracle doesn't have a case.
And Jonathan Schwartz is a duplicitous 'weasel'.

@Dietrich T. Schmitz, Your Linux Advocate The technical and legal concepts at play here are beyond esoteric. If a jury of the type of people who don't get out of jury duty have to decide this, it will be all about what the lawyers present and how. It won't matter who "has a case" or doesn't it will come down to who can communicate better with the jury.

@matthew_maurice and if Google presents themselves in court like they do in the marketplace - on technical merits - then they're sunk.
Sorry dude, but here are a few facts you just posted:

FACT: Dalvik does not compile. It translates java byte code into is own format. It uses Sun's Java SDK to do most of the hard work.

FACT: In order to support the Java syntax and reverse engineer the byte code, it must be implementing J2ME down to the signature of every single class and method. In other words, it may be a different implementation, but it is an EXACT copy of the J2ME interface down to the class names and methods with the exact parameters.

So, just because they are translating the byte code produced by Sun's Java SDK into something new, does not mean they aren't violating the terms of the contracts and using the IP in J2ME. The fact that all byte code must be produced by using Sun's J2ME compliant compiler shows that it is using Sun's technology in Dalvik.

Oracle does INDEED have a strong case
OS Reload Updated - 15th Aug 2010
@wackoae

And that's a VERY GOOD thing for open source and Linux because not only is Oracle just as open source friendly as Google is, but it's also more responsible than Google in developing open source software. Unlike Google, Oracle does it in such a way that it doesn't recklessly expose itself to being sued the way Sun did, or the way Google did.

Take Btrfs, a GPL licensed, futuristic and advanced new file system for Linux that supports pooling, snapshots, checksums, and other features that sound a lot like Suns ZFS, which Oracle now also owns. Oracle likes Linux so much that it funds Btrfs. The difference is that Oracle didn't mire Btrfs in legal quandary the way Sun did with ZFS before Oracle bought them.

In fact, Oracle is a major proponent of open software, pushing Linux and ACTIVELY taking a stand against the notion of software patents themselves.

This legal battle might kill Google's Android but it might also kill software patents all at once and that's very good, Google can easily let Android go if that means the end to software patents.

@OS Reload
How does it feel to be in love? Have you and Oracle started dating yet?
I get it! Oracle "supports" open source by following up on Sun's promise of "Use Java on everything" with a lawsuit.

Oracle will probably lose this lawsuit if i had to guess. You should look into income infuser and facebook cash generator if you are trying to make money online using Google and Facebook.
