Jasmine Noel, an expert in infrastructure management, is cited by ZDNet's Chris Jablonski for remarks on the opportunities presented to organizations by compliance laws such as Sarbanes-Oxley. Noel argues that "business service management (BSM), service level agreements(SLA), IT infrastructure library (ITIL), and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), in combination, help achieve "better alignmentbetween IT activities and business outcomes, clearer and streamlined ITprocesses and communication, and improved automation through managementtechnology."

Let me add another three-letter acronym, "SOA," to that list.

I recently put together some thoughts on the challenge/opportunity in an article for Database Trends & Applications. I want to go a step further and propose that SOX represents an unprecedented opportunity to achieve transparency between data sources across the enterprise. Why? Because compliance spending is being pushed from the C-level executive suite. What's the best vehicle to quickly achieve such integration? Web services.
