It's west coast versus east coast when it comes to the cities where small businesses are using social media most extensively. And west is putting the east to shame.

San Francisco was No. 1 on the Radius Social Small Business Report, which tracks the social media activities of small and midsize businesses (SMBs) in 85 U.S. cities. The top city on the east coast was Washington, D.C., at No. 4. New York doesn't show up until No. 7, and Boston doesn't make the 20 top, according to Radius, which produces the list. Radius describes itself as a sales intelligence company for SMBs.

The research from Radius measures social media presence along the following metrics: the number of SMBs with Web sites, social media profiles on Facebook and Twitter, and check-ins on Foursquare and Yelp reviews.

Here are some other notable statistics from the Radius report:

  • Grand Rapids, Mich., and Oklahoma City were the cities with the highest number of small businesses using Facebook pages (29 percent and 28 percent, respectively)
  • Buffalo, N.Y., and Rochester, Minn., were the cities with the most Foursquare check-ins (20 percent for both locations)
  • Charleston, West Virginia, was last on the Radius list of top 85 U.S. cities for social media usage by small businesses
