2008 ZDNet Holiday Gift Guide

OK, getting the wrong type of person a router for a gift could be a one-way ticket to holiday hell. But if you’re buying for someone who’s expressed a desire for one, or you want to take advantage of holiday deals to upgrade your own network, there are plenty of worthy products that are great for staying connected. Here are four solid ones to consider.

Linksys WRT110 RangePlus Wireless RouterThough the spec hasn’t been officially ratified yet, 802.11n is far enough along that you should go that route for a brand-new networks, but if it’s still too pricey, the WRT110 RangePlus Wireless Router can provide some of the N benefits with a cheaper 802.11g router. If you happen to have an 802.11n adapter, this Linksys uses RangePlus technology to provide throughout and range superior to other G hardware; even if you just have a 802.11g network, the WRT110 delivers outstanding range. No D-Link?

I've always used D-Link products and have always had good luck. I've had the DIR-655 for over a year now and have never had a problem.

For the record, I'll never let another Belkin product thru the door of my house. I had bad luck with two of their products and even worse luck with their customer service reps when calling for support. Their products stink. Their support staff stink.

I Was Going to Say

I've got a D-Link Wireless-N router w/gigabit Ethernet at home, and a AirPort Extreme at my office - and both work just fine w/everything I throw at them.

The last few Linksys routers, OTOH, keep not connecting to the built-in wifi on Netbooks - or Sony VAIOs, or wireless mobile phones.... :/

I picked up a Linksys "travel router" this summer at a garage sale for $10. It's literally the size of GBA SP. It does B/G, not N band, but the Wii doesn't use N anyway. Pretty much anything that does G is good enough for a Wii I think, as long as you are within it's range. My 11 year old son did all the configuration for the Wii too. All I did was plug it in and made sure that the desktops were working.
