A couple of people from Sunbelt Software, maker of CounterSpy, stopped by the office today to tell me about their upcoming, version 1.5, release of the product. I was impressed when they first showed me CounterSpy back in December of last year, even though it was built from the Giant Antispyware codebase. Since then (and since Microsoft bought Giant), Sunbelt has been rewriting the CounterSpy code, improving scan times and working from a larger definition file. They promised me that version 1.5, which should be here around the end of the month, goes way beyond the original Giant code. Of course, it will still feature real-time monitoring, your choice of quick or full scans, automatic updates, and a full set of tools, such as a hosts file editor, browser extension manager, and file shredder. Sunbelt also maintains a Web-based research center, with a spyware encyclopedia and various interesting articles.
