A few days ago, it was discovered that anti-spyware program SpywareCleaner has a new "free" version that is sponsored by adware from WhenU. The web page for SpywareCleaner clearly discloses that WhenU is bundled with the free version and there is a for-pay version available sans adware.

A bit of history about SpywareCleaner -- it was originally listed on the Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites when the page was first published in June 2004. It was subsequently de-listed in March 2005 when a new version with new definitions were released that corrected previous problems with the application. SpywareCleaner has been re-listed on the rogues' page due bundling adware, specifically WhenU Save!

I have not downloaded the free SpywareCleaner, but this report indicates that the program did not detect WhenU Save! I supposed if SpyCleaner detected and removed WhenU Save!, that would be like biting the hand that feeds it.  SpywareCleaner appears to be from TopDownloads Networks. The domain spywarecleaner.net is registered to an outfit called Laurente Software. Topdownloads.net is registered to an individual but the address is the same. I can't see the logic in bundling an anti-spyware app with adware nor can I imagine users being willing to pay the price of having pop-ups for an anti-spyware program when there are free anti-spyware apps available with no strings attached. Ad-ware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Windows Defender Beta 2 and SUPERAnti-Spyware are free and worthy of mention.

  • You think that's bad??! Dell is worse!

Dell has a new partnership with MyWay. That means that all the crap-ware that MyWay makes will be on your brand new Dell computer before you turn it on for the first time. Even the default homepage in the web browser is a MyWay customized version of Dell's site (dell.myway.com). I've seen several computers from Dell with this garbage and it's infuriating. One of the apps installed is MyWay SearchBar which is classified as SPYWARE *&* ADWARE in every legitimate anti-spyware to date because of MyWay collecting website history and search entries, as well as deceptive installations of Search Assistant. Not only that, Dell charges $49 EXTRA to get a computer without MyWay installed on it!!! It seems that they're picking up deceptive business practises from their new partner. So that's how the largest computer manufacturer in the world does business?? NO. THANK. YOU.

  • Adware is a threat to legitimate online advertising

Adware pushes content to you in ways you don't expect or want.
It gives a bad image of online advertising to the general public.

That's very sad because millions of legitimate publishers create
wonderful content supported by Google AdSense and Yahoo!
Ads and when adware companies lile WhenU pollute the ad
space, everybody loses because users blind themselves from -
    any- ads.

Adware companies need to be eradicated, not encouraged. They
bring minimal or no value and annoy users like few other banes.
