A new version of HijackThis just came out, toting along some new features that will really help you clean out your computer. HijackThis already enjoys a great reputation as an essential tool for finding out what's on your computer. The new version adds tools, including a process manager and hosts file editor. The process manager works just like your task manager, showing all running processes and letting you shut them down. The hosts file editor gives you quick access to your hosts file--I wish the program had also included links to some of the Web sites that offer hosts files which block ad servers. I particularly like the tool that lets you designate files to be deleted when you reboot. I've encountered some very stubborn files that would not let me remove them no matter what I tried. Although HijackThis can generate a list of your start up programs, I would really be happy if it had a full on startup manager. For now, I'll continue to use WinPatrol.
