Don't get excited over cable breaks. Yet.

Summary: This weekend there was a lot of hand wringing over some posts to Digg, reddit, and slash dot that pointed to this page at the Internet Traffic Report. There is one router in Iran that is not responding to pings so it shows up red.

This weekend there was a lot of hand wringing over some posts to Digg, reddit, and slash dot that pointed to this page at the Internet Traffic Report. There is one router in Iran that is not responding to pings so it shows up red. This led to the rapid development of a conspiracy theory that the US is systematically cutting the undersea cables to the Mideast in preparation for an invasion of Iran!

For a great analysis of the cable breaks and the impact on Mideastern countries check out the Renesys blog. In one post they even track the "winners and losers" in the telecom space as those networks that were cut off scramble to replace their provider. I'll be checking this blog often from now on!

  • Oh come on...

...The US could invade Iran, with or without the internet still active. Though the internet can be used as a recruiting tool for groups like Al Queda and Hamas, it's also used to carry communications for the Military, along with satellites.

if I had to make a guess ....
I would guess that this has nothing to do with an Invasion. Tho following is probably more likely ...

    • So Iran is starting Bourse to trade Oil in Euros etc, and they reach space

And some people think the cables have been cut by accident?
The USS Jimmy Carter is probably there, or Shayetet-13, cutting the cables.
The thing is, even though it might be in US interests to stop trading oil in anything other than USD (basically necessary because of decade after decade of ruinous fiscal administration), is it RIGHT?
"Might" or "Right".... can't be both.
"Right" is to allow other countries to choose the currency they trade in without invading them, or blowing up their internet cable. At least that's my opinion.
