Apple includes same-sex emoji in iOS 6, a San Francisco flirting app startup is rocked by rape charges, Lara Croft gets an unwelcome sex makeover and more.

New lesbian and gay iPhone iOS 6 emoticons

The newest emoticons for Apple's iPhone include the expected couple and family emoji - but two new couplings have been added to the Apple family pantheon.

Along with a male and female couple, mixed gender emoticons are joined by two same-sex couples.

A cheery lesbian couple holds hands, and a happy gay male couple stand together with hands clasped in partnership.

While lesbian and gay pundits are pleased about the inclusion, there is no word yet as to negative reactions to the new emoji.

New, weaker, rape-prone Lara Croft angers fans

If you're looking for a reason to get mad this week, look no further than the new version of Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot.

Croft has been restyled as a "weak girl" in a play to elicit empathy and protection from presumably male gamers.

Worse, she's purposely put in situations expressly for risk of rape, in hopes the threat of gender violence will entice players to "save" her.

The fearless, unstoppable heroine has also been made less curvy, in an attempt to make her seem more like a "real girl."

Real girls - and guys - that play the game are furious about the new Lara and underlying assumptions behind the changes, and aren't holding back their rage in comments about what the game dev leads seem to be saying about girls and guys that play Tomb Raider.

I'm guessing those Tomb Raider team leads weren't women...

Cold reception for Microsoft's "penis song"

At the 2012 Microsoft Norwegian Developers Conference, attendees were treated to a very special song about sex and drugs - well, it was the Microsoft uber-nerd version of a sex and drugs anthem, anyway.

With English clearly as a second language, the entertainers did a dance routine to a song that included the lyrics, “Tonight we’re gonna party and coding is our drugs.”

They sang,

“I got the skills to impress, I’m a computer genius. The words “Micro” and “Soft” don’t apply to my penis.” The closed caption screens showed the words, “(or vagina)”.

I'm not sure which image to scrub from your brain first. But Microsoft spokespeople didn't find any of the song and dance routine funny in the least, and immediately issued the most uptight apologies they could squeeze out.

Videos on YouTube and the Striesand Effect will no doubt keep the Azure Penis (or vagina!) scandal in everyone's minds for the foreseeable future.

Rape charges in social flirting app Skout's startup nightmare

Social networking flirting app Skout (san Francisco) has been rocked by rape charges brought against three adult men who allegedly used Skout to pose as teens and sexually assault children.

The app is intended for adult flirting exchanges, but its popularity brought oodles of minors in so it expanded its arena to include a separate service for 13-17 year olds.

The men accused of raping a 15-year-old Ohio girl, a 12-year-old California girl and a 13-year-old boy in Wisconsin. Skout's founder is calling the situation his "worst fear."

In April, Skout got $22 million from Silicon Valley's VC firm Andreessen Horowitz.

VCs wash hands of Finnish social network on reports of pedo activity

Finnish social networking site Habbo (aka Habbo Hotel) has shut its chatrooms until further notice over allegations that its rooms were hunting grounds for illegal underage sexual exchanges and purportedly were grounds for "grooming" young people for sexual contact.

With 268 million users and 9 million uniques a month, Habbo is bustling despite its languishing reputation.

But that hasn't stopped investors from dumping Habbo on news of the chatrooms' alleged illicit activities.

The second largest shareholder, Balderton Capital, has dropped its 13% and is resigning from the board. They are coming under fire for abandoning an investment during a crisis: critics are attempting to draw skewed parallels between Balderton and Habbo's parent company, and Reddit with Conde Nast, suggesting that material in Reddit is equally as foul as the allegations made toward Habbo Hotel.

Violet, Not agreeing with depicting Laura as 'weak', but otherwise isn't a more realistic depiction of female bodies in games an improvement? less sexist?

  • Lara Croft Reboot

What's the big deal with the Lara Croft reboot? The new Lara is more delicate, because the game takes place before she becomes the famous "Tomb Raider". Obviously, she's more delicate because this is before she becomes the badass we all know. In fact, its the experiences that she will go through in the game that turn her into a badass. Finally the game is more survival than action adventure, so the lead character HAS to be fragile (you can't create hte "Oh crap! I'm gonna die!" tension when your lead is indestructible). Finally, as a previous poster mentioned, wouldn't a less curvacious Lara make her LESS sexist?
