Sex Tech Weekly: Escort Data, Santorum SEO, Facebook Porn Photos

Summary: UK escort infographic, Facebook false-flagged porn, Rick Santorum makes his Google problem worse.

Sex and technology continue their fascinating and sensational dance.

This week we see what happens when a data nerd analyzes call girl ads and a sex worker survey in Britain, Facebook’s obscene and pornographic flagged photos turn out to be false claims, and beloved search engine expert Danny Sullivan takes a look at Rick Santorum’s enduring issues with Google search results.

The Data of Call Girls

Following his wildly popular infographic and data analysis of call girl clients Dirty Words: A Probing Analysis of 5000 Call Girl Reviews, Jon Millward is back with a further textual dataset exploration on female escorts in the UK.

Life of a Call Girl: Fantasy vs. Reality is another fascinating word-based infographic and analysis that examines the textual data world of UK’s female sex workers.

He asked them everything from how they got started to what they do and how much they charge, and much more.

Interestingly, a number of respondents claimed they got into doing sex work from being inspired after watching the UK TV show “Secret Diary of A Call Girl.”

The top career they named as their dream job, they told Millward, was being a writer.

Facebook’s flagged photos mostly not porn

If you ever read stats about how much porn gets posted to Facebook based on data pulling from user-flagged reports, then you can count on those numbers being wrong.

Facebook recently determined that the majority of photos its users reported as offensive were not actually offensive. Much of the time, they just involved unflattering angles or situations.

Many people have been victimized by abuse of the photo flagging report tool, some have even had their accounts penalized or worse when they have done nothing wrong.

According to AllThingsD,

After Facebook noticed how often users were putting the flagging tool to unintended use, the company changed its photo-reporting dialogue in August, allowing users to message the person who posted the photo and complain.

New options include, “I don’t like this photo of me,” “It’s harassing me” and “It’s harassing a friend.”

Tech lives up to its reputation as a “Sausage Fest”

If you’ve ever been at a tech or specifically a startup event, looked around, and felt like it was a place for me to go be with other men, they you were not imagining things.

Search engine expert opines on Santorum’s “Google problem”

Much ado has been made about Rick Santorum’s problem, in that his last name acquired a double meaning as a reminder of his unfortunate stance on gay rights and LGBT people.

Santorum has reacted in one notably clueless fashion: to blame Google for the problem and expect the company to take action on his behalf.

Search engine expert Danny Sullivan took a closer look at the ranking questions brought up by the issue of name association on Google and potential SEO solutions.

However, Sullivan discovered something more: how Santorum is actually making his own problem worse with bad search engine tactics - namely, removing his own website from Google.
