While at the Symantec/Altiris event a week or so ago, I had a chance to speak with Scott Jones about Altiris' Software Virtualization Solution (SVS). At the time, I had to agree to an embargo so that the company could announce a new version of several software products. The products have been launched and I'm going to comment on Software Virtualization Solution.

First of all, Scott and I had a fascinating discussion about the history of virtualization, what are the important areas of virtualization and what the likely future was for each layer of technology. It appears we both hold a similar view of things. I hope I'll have a chance to speak with him again in the future. Here's how Altiris would describe SVS:

Altiris® Software Virtualization Solution™ software is a revolutionary approach to software management. By placing applications and data into managed units called Virtual Software Packages, Software Virtualization Solution allows you to instantly activate, deactivate or reset applications and to completely avoid conflicts between applications, without altering the base Windows installation. Application streaming provides the on-demand delivery mechanism that leverages the power of Software Virtualization Solution to enable the real-time infrastructure. Get more information about how Software Virtualization Solution can impact your organization. Get access to the Altiris® Juice™, the exciting new site packed with Software Virtualization Solution articles, tips, and tools. Key features and benefits

  • Eliminate application conflicts
  • Instantly repair damaged applications
  • Significantly reduce testing time for application rollouts
  • On-demand application delivery

SVS seems to fall into both the acess and application virtualization segments of the Kusnetzky Group model of virtualization: SVS is a bit different from many other application virtualization products, such as LANDesk or Thinstall, is the attempt to allow encapsulated applications to integrate with other applications on a system while still offering a certain level of isolation.

I could write about this technology for hours but, I think the better course of action would be for you to visit the Symantec web site and view the demonstration material that can be found there. It's facinating.
