Broward County Water and Wastewater Services, A Pano Logic customer profile

Summary: From time to time, I have the opportunity to communicate with someone actually using a vendor's technology and learn a bit about how the decision was made, how the technology is being used and any advice that person would offer about that technology. This time, Stephen Dyer of Broward County Water and Wastewater Services was kind enough to answer a few questions.

Introduce yourself and your organization?

Stephen Dyer, Systems Network Analyst, Broward County Water and Wastewater Services. Broward County Water and Wastewater Services provides high quality, cost effective and environmentally responsible services to its customers. The utility provides retail water distribution to more than 230,000 residents and wastewater collection to more than 160,000 residents in Broward County. The utility also provides storm water and canal management services, supporting aquifer recharge and flood management throughout Broward County.

What were you doing that required desktop virtualization?

We wanted to increase endpoint security, decrease deployment time, and implement measures to meet the goals set forth by Broward County Commissioners to reduce carbon footprint.

What products did you consider before making a selection?

We evaluated all the thin client and zero client options as well as virtualization platforms that were available during the time of selection. This included, but was not limited to options available from Wyse, Dell, Citrix, Pano Logic, VMware, and Microsoft.

Why did you select Pano Logic?

Pano Logic’s solution met our needs the best. With security being our most important concern, the zero client aspect of Pano devices met this objective best since no data is stored locally and we can lock down the end point from a central management console. The Pano Logic solution also was one of the least expensive options, produced the greatest energy savings, and are extremely simple to setup.

What tangible benefits has your organization gotten through the use of this product?

The labor required to deploy and maintain the desktops was our primary driver for switching to virtualization. We’ve also realized a reduced total cost of ownership through reduced energy bills and quicker rollouts. The centralized administration and improved security also make our work much easier.

What advice would you give others facing similar issues?

Purchase the starter kit from Pano Logic, implement it in a test environment, and get to know what it can and cannot do for you. Then invite every other product vendor to give you their dog and pony show so you can compare their product offering to the Pano system. At the time of our evaluation, no other product came close, and most were considerably more expensive to implement.
