Citrix and NetApp Do the Virtualization Dance Together

I see that Citrix and NetApp have gotten together to provide a virtual processing/virtual storage solution. As I mentioned in the post The dynamic duo of virtual storage and virtual processing, virtual processing and virtual storage are powerful separately but, using them ought to be part of most organization's virtualized IT infrastructure.

Here's how Citrix and NetApp describe their partnership

Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CTXS), the global leader in application delivery infrastructure, and NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP), a leading provider of innovative data management solutions, today announced a global, strategic partnership to deliver a complete server virtualization solution capable of fully leveraging the power of NetApp® storage solutions. Citrix XenServer™ Adapter for NetApp Data ONTAP® enables customers to unlock the power of virtualized storage in Citrix XenServer environments. This jointly developed certified solution simplifies virtual machine creation and management by allowing customers to centrally manage storage configuration and provisioning from a single console, making it one of the industry’s few virtualization solutions optimized for storage environments. Citrix and NetApp are building on their existing relationship and extending virtualized data management environment capabilities included in Citrix XenServer 4.1, which began shipping today.

Snapshot Analysis

Citrix and NetApp are not the first to do the virtual processing/virtual storagfe dance. VMware obviously has been dancing with EMC for quite some time. Virtual Iron and FalconStor announced their partnership back in January 2008. That being said, Citrix's community will find this a very valuable addition to their solution portfolio.

If your organization is using Citrix's XenServer will this announcement cause a change in your virtual storage strategy? If your organization is not currently using XenServer, will this announcement be enough to convince your organization to look at the Citrix/NetApp solution?
