It appears that management tools for virtual and cloud environments will be a really big thing at the upcoming VMworld.  I've had at least ten different suppliers try to set up briefings at the event.  I won't be attending the event this year due, unfortunately.  I hope to speak with a few of them in detail after the event.

A second category that appears to be bubbling away on the burner is desktop virtualization. I've been approached by at least five different suppliers in this category.  A number of them focus primarily on managing and provisioning virtual desktops. The level of innovation here is intriguing to be sure.

I haven't heard much about innovation in the area of the actual virtual machine software or hypervisor. Since this is VMware's event, I would have expected to get wind of things Citrix, Microsoft and others were doing in this space. Maybe they're quiet about what they're going to launch to make sure that the ambush of VMware is well executed.
