The folks at Netuitive recently introduced me to what they're doing and I thought it was rather clever. They've observed that virtualized environments combined with the underlying physical systems, networks and storage are a complicated mess to manage. The result is that parameter or script-based management solutions often are not totally in sync with the ever changing environment. While that doesn't appear to be all that bad, it can mean that an outage might not automatically correct itself when things reboot or restart.
So, Netuitive monitors the environment, learns from what it finds and dynamically adjusts itself so that a minor outage doesn't have to turn into a disaster. They've developed a product that helps with a complex physical environment and another that helps with a complex virtual machine environment based upon VMware's products.
This combination appears to offer what is needed to address the needs of quite a number of organizations. Those organizations who are working with Citrix's XenServer, Microsoft's Hyper-V or the open source Xen or KVM hypervisors, however, may not get a complete solution with these products.
If you're facing a complex environment, it would certainly be worth the time to read about what Netuitive is doing.
