Summary: Making hosted environments simple.

Parallels and GoDaddy just announced a partnership in which GoDaddy would utilize a self-service management tool, Parallels Small Business Panel, to support its customers. This partnership allows GoDaddy to make it easy for Small to Medium size businesses to control their own virtual environments. It also gives them access to a large number of applications that are supported in this environment.

Here’s what Parallels has to say about this announcement

Cloud-enablement leader, Parallels, announced today that Parallels Small Business Panel has attracted some of the biggest names in the industry within months of release.

Go Daddy, the world’s largest domain name registrar and leading Web hosting provider, began offering Parallels Small Business Panel to its more than 7.5 million customers, many of whom are small businesses.

Other successful adopters of Parallels Small Business Panel include The Planet, Softlayer, Softcom, Codero, Layershift, ServInt, Arsys, Network Group Europe and Host Europe.

Parallels Small Business Panel features a game-changing control panel designed for small businesses, offering simple wizards and productivity tools for collaboration, file sharing and business management. This makes self-service possible for all employees using the solution.

Parallels Small Business Panel 10.1 gives users an intuitive interface designed to connect employees to the right applications, which can be installed with a single click with no need for special training or technical knowledge. In addition, Parallels Small Business Panel incorporates the functionality of additional Parallels solutions for free, including Parallels Sitebuilder and Parallels Power Pack.

Users also have access to over 200 applications that increase productivity, efficiency and creativity but require no prior knowledge of the product to utilize the benefits. Some of the top applications available for free include Wordpress, SugarCRM, Droopal and Mumbo.

Snapshot analysis

There are several ways that allow multiple workloads, multiple tenants to share the same physical system. One approach uses the processing virtualization technology known as virtual machine technology. The other segments the functions of a single operating system allowing multiple workloads to run in isolation. Each has its place. Each approach also requires different management tools.

Single System Processing Virtualization

Virtual machine technology, such as that offered by VMware, Citrix, Microsoft, Red Hat, Novell and Parallels itself, is really useful when each workload requires a different operating system. This approach makes it possible for a single physical system to support Windows, UNIX and Linux workloads simultaneously and at the same time.

Operating system virtualization and partitioning technology, such as that offered by Parallels and a number of suppliers of UNIX, makes it possible for multiple workloads to share a single system running a single operating system.

When flexibility is the goal, virtual machine technology is the best choice. This flexibility comes at a cost, however. Each workload has an operating system, data management tools, management tools and the like. This means separate software licenses, memory and storage are required for each workload.

When efficiency and performance are the goals and it is acceptable that each workload runs on the same single operating system, Operating system virtualization and partitioning is the best choice. There is a single operating system which means software licensing, memory and storage are less costly.

Managed and hosting services companies are all about efficiency

Since managed and hosting services companies are trying to minimize costs while maximizing what each of their machines can support, operating system virtualization and partitioning are mainstays in their datacenters. Since they also want to minimize their management and support costs, they seek out tools allowing their tenants to control their own virtual environments.

Parallels self-service management tools

Parallels has long offered both operating system virtualization and self-service management environments. So do a few other competitors including cPanel. Typically, however, the tools were designed for more sophisticated tenants. At times, these tools were too complex for small to medium size businesses. The Small Business Panel is aimed at giving those people an easy-to-use yet powerful tool to manage their own virtual environments.

GoDaddy and other Parallels partners will most certainly find this tool helpful.
