Quest's Provision Networks announced that they were offering its Virtual Access Suite for Microsoft Hyper-V-based environments at Microsoft's Management Summit in Las Vegas.

Here's what they announced:

Quest Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: QSFT) announced today that the Provision Networks Virtual Access Suite supports Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, the next-generation hypervisor-based server virtualization platform. Provision Networks Virtual Access Suite version 5.10 is the first hosted Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution to support Hyper-V with full integration for brokering, desktop lifecycle management and power management. With this development, the Provision Networks division is further extending Quest’s leadership in Windows infrastructure management from the desktop to the datacenter.

Here's what they say it does:

Provision Networks hosted desktop virtualization solutions embrace and extend Microsoft’s vision of desktop to datacenter virtualization. The Provision Networks Virtual Access Suite provides compatibility with Microsoft Application Virtualization (formerly SoftGrid Application Virtualization), enabling application streaming and extending Microsoft Windows Server Terminal Services for large-scale deployments. Provision Networks Virtual Access Suite integration with Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V delivers the first VDI solution for Microsoft’s latest platform, and extends Hyper-V’s varied use cases to VDI. The product will also support the Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 once available for Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V management.

Snapshot Analysis

Quest has been building a comprehensive product portfolio for access virtualization, application virtualization and management of virtualized resources. Provision Networks, now a part of Quest, has long offered very interesting access virtualization and application virtualization . Now, the company is reaching out to create an access mechanism for Microsoft's Hyper-V which will certainly be of interest to Microsoft shops.

Provision faces challenges from a number of suppliers including Microsoft, Citrix/XenSource, Endeavors Technologies and a few others. What's interesting is that Provision Networks is now offering a very broad portfolio of desktop virtualization solutions that reaches from embracing and extending the Microsoft Terminal Services platform and Virtual Infrastructure platforms from VMware, Virtual Iron, Parallels, and Microsoft.
