By | November 19, 2011, 4:06am PST

Summary: Would you like to listen to a recording of my Webcast, “When is virtual machine software the wrong choice”?

I recently presented a Webcast “When is virtual machine software the wrong choice?” for O’Reilly Media promoting my book “Virtualization: A Manager’s Guide“.

The Webcast presented the following topics:

  • What is virtualization anyway?
  • Virtualization has been in use for a long time
  • Many layers of virtualization in use today
  • Processing virtualization
  • When is virtual machine software the right choice?
  • Another virtualization choice for consolidation and optimization
  • When is it the wrong choice?
  • Some suggestions

@greg@... Virtualization is a topic far broader than the use of virtual machine software. You've made some good points that storage and network virtualization (two other layers of virtualization technology are also very important.

"When is virtual machine software the wrong choice?"

When:

-It only takes a single CPU to do what you're doing.
-You're an individual or a small business that only needs basic stuff like word processing and email.
-When every last drop of performance is so important that there can be absolutely no overhead.
-When what you're doing is simple enough that putting it into a VM would be more trouble than it's worth.
-When you don't have enough memory for virtual machines.
@CobraA1 All of those, of course, are good points. The points I was making were centered differently. I focused on the fact that there are many different types of virtualization technology. Virtual machine software is only one of five different types of processing virtualization technologies and is not always the best choice. There are six other layers of virtualization technology as well.

Thanks for your observations!

Too often there is confusion between virtualization assumed to be just for consolidation and virtualization for agility and enablement. That prompts the question of should everything be virtualized vs. consolidated. There are plenty of use scenarios where even if there is only one CPU needed for the job where virtualization for agility, flexibility, HA and so forth can be an option, that is if those functions are needed. Not all virtualizaiton deployments have to focus on consolidating. Likewise not everything can be consolidated or virtualized, however there is plenty of oppourtunities in virtualization life beyond consolidation.
