Box lands GE deal

Box lands a deal with General Electric, who could become a strong reference customer for the cloud storage and collaboration company.

Box on Thursday said it inked a deal to bring its cloud collaboration tools to General Electric.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but the GE account is a nice win for Box, which filed for an initial public offering and raised eyebrows about its cash burn and losses.

Since Box's IPO filing, rivals such as EMC's Syncplicity, have tried to get an edge by appearing more stable. GE has a history of adopting cloud technologies from relative new enterprise vendors and giving them a stamp of approval. For instance, GE started using Salesforce.com early on and now serves as a frequent reference customer.

For its part, GE said it will centralize content on Box to better hand it out to its 300,000 strong employee base. Box will be used for collaborating between business units and partners; housing content and integrating with various systems and providing centralized IT control.

In a blog post, Box CEO Aaron Levie said that "the scale of GE’s environment and the scope of their IT ambitions will inevitably help shape and evolve Box’s own development."
