The government will spend over $240 million on IT systems as part of a $1 billion investment over the next four years for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The NDIS is designed to provide support to people living with significant and permanent disabilities. The scheme will begin in mid-2013 in four locations around Australia, and will support approximately 10,000 people. This will be expanded to 20,000 by mid-2014.
While the vast majority of the funding will be directed to provide packages directly to people with disabilities and the coordinators to deliver the care and support to those people, the government has allocated $240.3 million to "build and operate an NDIS information technology system".
The system will "collect and analyse data to monitor client outcomes and measure the performance of the new arrangements", the budget documents said.
An additional $53 million will be provided over four years to establish a transition agency to manage the delivery of the services from 2013.
