The app released for download on the Android Market redirects customers to a mobile-optimised version of the NetBank website. It has been modified from the original iPhone version specifically for Android users with customised screen sizes and resolution for the Android platform.

The bank's general manager of direct channels Quentin Boyes said CBA was compelled to develop the app due to the rising popularity of Android devices in Australia in the last few months.

"Approximately 20 per cent of total daily NetBank log-ons are initiated through mobile devices with iPhone holding pole position to date," he said in a statement. "However, we have seen the popularity of Android phones double in the past three months, hence this launch."

National Australia Bank released its own Android app late last year, while St George was the first bank in Australia to go live with a banking app on Android in November last year.

  • its hardly an app, it just links to the mobile version of the website, which has been around for ages.

  • Could this have anything to do with all the error messages on netbank today? Their call center is also overloaded, not putting people on hold, just dropping their calls and asking them to call back. Just lovely for me stuck in New York unable to access my money!
